Hi from Phil in Cumbria in the north of England

Hi, I’m that guy who has been learning to play guitar for years but still can’t play a song through from start to finish. I intend to put that right by posting a video of a new song at the end of each month this year. I thought I’d pop in here first to say hello, and give you the chance to tell me what else I need to do to use this community properly. Thanks all and happy new year!

Welcome to the community. That’s a great goal. For me it’s always been about songs. Once I could play my first song all the way through, that was the breakthrough I needed. Since you’ve not played any all the way through for some time, I’d encourage you to start with a simple song with simple chords. Get used to the discipline of playing it from start to finish. Then expand to more songs and start to pay closet attention to the intro and outro. Look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi Phil ,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Just take a look around first and read the moderators Community Guidelines and if you have any questions just ask them, it is difficult to really do something wrong here and if something wrong is posted you will notice it quickly enough and it will be communicated kindly … this place is a bit different from most communities that I have read from hundreds of people … much friendlier and a moderation that the internet can set an example of :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Greetings,Rogier

Hi Phi, and welcome to a great place. The answer to your question is to keep posting and asking more questions, but most of all, have fun learning and make friends :+1:

Welcome Phil!

Wow. I hope you don’t put too much pressure on yourself, but that’s a good plan!
I can find myself in your description, learning, practicing, noodling, but very rarely finishing to learn a song. To get the last bits right is the most difficult for me…

Thanks for the reassurance Rogier, I was a bit concerned that one of the moderators would tell me that I couldn’t post a video in the performance section unless I’d related my full life story here first

Thanks Ted. If I guess correctly, BLIM is the blues immersion course. I’m not that far advanced yet, still working my way through the standard course.

Hello Phil.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community.
Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.

Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard

Thanks Richard. Everyone has been very welcoming. I do have a couple of questions. I thought that playing the song would be the hard part, and posting the video would be the easy part. But, do I upload the video to this website, or do I actually upload the video to YouTube and then just post a link here? And do I post the video (or link) to the “AVOYP” section, or for my first recordings should I use the “Beginner’s Safe Space”? Thanks.

Hi Phil and welcome to our Community.

Yes, that’s how we usually share videos, there are other ways too but this seems the most common one.

You can either post on the Beginner Safe Space or AVOYP, it’s up to you; you understand what the difference is by reading Richard’s @Richard_close2u introduction to the Beginner Safe Space

Do not hesitate to ask if there’s anything else we can help with.

Looking foward to get to know you better

Thanks for the replies, Silvia. I don’t have a YouTube account and I have never posted a video to YouTube, but millions of other people have managed to do it, so I’m sure I’ll figure it out.
