Hi all - Scott from upstate NY. 44. I wanted to learn acoustic guitar a few years ago but a cycling accident and a broken right arm made holding a guitar really uncomfortable. I got the itch to try again and discovered the Taylor Academy series, which comes with a bevel. MUCH better.
I started with Simply Guitar but (No offense to the people there) that program lets me cheat. I can play something and be “close enough” and it says I got it. I need to hold myself accountable. Justin seems like an awesome teacher and I’m excited to join this community.
I already have a piano background and I’m learning guitar and bass at the same time. I figure - I’ll learn how to twist my fingers into a pretzel for guitar chords, then stretch them back out with the bass. Win-win!
I’m about a month into my guitar journey. If Justin can teach me to play a C major chord cleanly I’ll consider him a wizard!
I’m sure you can do better than that With your piano background at least the basic (and possibly advanced) music theory is no mystery to you, a first giant step to master any instrument. Achieving the desired level of technique on the guitar is just a matter of practicing, but with your obvious willingness to learn that should come naturally.
This is a great community, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
All the best,
Tomasz
Hi Scott, welcome to the community forum. I know that you will learn how to play the C chord. Just listen to Justin’s lesson on how to play the C chord more than once and pay special attention to his advice on how to position your hand when playing the C chord. I found the key is following his advice to rotate the wrist to make it easier for the ring finger to reach the third fret. You will do well with background in piano. That will make some later lessons easier to understand. Have fun learning to play guitar.
Welcome to the community, look forward to hearing more from you. I waited till I was 53 to get serious about guitar so am a bit jealous when someone so much younger starts.
Hello Scott. I hope the wizardry is upon you by now.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.
Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.
Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.
Hello Scott and welcome to our Community! I hope you’re doing well with your C chord…is Justin proving to be a wizard? That made me smile …but you know it’s up to you to do the real magic
