Hi there, Claus from Norway :-)

For many years I wanted to learn to play the guitar and this summer I had my first lesson at a former musician at almost 58 years young. He asked what I wanted to play and it was Lyin’ Eyes with Eagles and Phantom 308 with Tom Waits from an interview, At The Scene '73, just before he became famous. So my first chords were C, Am, F and G. The easy F where first finger is on string 1 and 2, second on string 3 and third on string 4.

Took my daughters guitar with nylon-strings, swapped the strings since I am lefthanded. Looked at the drawings of chord C, strum, Am, strum and so forth. After a while I was able to put it into a sequence. But trying to immitate TW’s strumming is not easy, so I made up my own strumming. When I learned these chords I also realised Lyin’ Eyes was further down the road. And also began to listen to my favourite-music differently. Then looked for tutorials online where Justin Guitar was the third I visited. I owe much of my skills to these lessons being free. Later bought a subscription for iOS.

Francis Cabrel have the beautiful Je t’aimais, je t’aime, je t’aimerai which I then aspired to learn, but strumming is hard. Then I heard Peaceful Easy Feeling with Eagles, and that have an easier strumming. So I slowly but surely progressed. In the meantime I bought a lefthanded accoustic guitar with a much better sound.

The iOS-app is very suited to how I like to learn, first I played Peacefull Easy Feeling at normal speed, but that was way to fast for me. So I slowed it down to half speed and was somewhat able to follow along. After a while I increased the speed, struggled a bit with the chords. But lately I have rehearsed at normal speed and this is quite enjoyable even though the joy is still greater than the precision.

Then Justin released the Wish You Were Here video, and man, that was awesome. I watched the video, learned the basics in level 1, and it took a while before I was able to move to level 2. I haven’t gone beyond this but is playing the intro until the rest of the song begin, and this is very rewarding.

The more I learn the better I get at knowing what is within my reach and Have You Ever Seen The Rain with Credence Clearwater Revival is a dear favourite at the moment.

I finished the first beginner module and did most of the practice but at the moment I mostly play WYWH, then CCR and finally Eagles, each 3-5 times. Just bought a PRS SE electric guitar and have an ambition to learn some songs from Eric Claptons Just One Night live-album from Japan.

I still go to my local tutor every 3’rd week since he is able to give some immediate feedback, very nice hints, why scales are the way they are etc.

Pardon for this lengthy introduction. And thank you for all the free videos that is a great way to empower us. Take care.

welcome to the forum! Earlier today I welcomed Hans and explained I have a brother named Hans, well guess what, I also have another brother who’s name is Klaus. If a Seigfried or a Horst joins up as well it will be the whole set of brothers for me. Haha.

Look foward to hearing more from you

Hello Claus.

Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.

Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard

Thank you for your kind response. I was travelling to my parents (driving home for x-mas). I have played on the electric guitar a couple of times, bought a headphone-amp that I can connect to my speakers, and even though it sounds different there are so many different ways it can be changed that finding “the right tune” is difficult for me.

Playing Have You Ever Seen The Rain is nice, and different from the acoustic. I need a more sturdy pick. And I understand the strings are different. When I strum and hit string five and six they sound “clunkier”, like they don’t sound as natural to the song as the first four strings. Is it normal to mostly leave out the two thickest string when strumming using “good old faithfull”?

Nice introduction Claus! Good timing as well, I imagine Norway as pretty dark these months: great for staying indoors and bringing good vibes with a guitar:D

It is indeed quite dark when there is no snow. Been raining where I live so the snow melted. But getting lighter day by day. :sun_with_face:
