Hi everyone, just a query about how fast to progress on the theory courses.
My understanding is that the grades roughly align with the practical courses, I’ve just finished grade 3 theory and am about half way through grade 3 of the beginners course.
So my question is, should I wait until I’ve completed the beginners course before moving on or press ahead with grade 4 theory?
Any thoughts greatly appreciated

My view is that the two course are not really aligned although knowing things like basic chord construction and chords in the key is very helpful. But if you are in Grade 1 Guitar it is not particularly helpful to know about Dominant 7th Chords. Having said that it depends what sort person you are, for me I want to know how and why things work so my progress through theory course was ahead of my guitar progress.
Just my take on it.

Thanks for the reply, pretty much what I’ve been thinking. I feel the need to learn something new

You make it evident from whence your moniker, @micknew sprang…
if your novelty itch needs more scratching, and you have the JustinApp, there are new songs, thoughtfully curated, and presented, that have novelty tucked into their being (or from something you’ve never even heard before). Barring the app, there’re a load of tutorials from Justin, and elsewhere, and even more TABs and chords of songs abounding in/on the whateveryoucallit.

Yes, I know, it’s strange. A lot of people really dislike the theory side, but I find it really interesting.

In my case I’ve held off with a lot of the theory because I don’t want to learn a lot of stuff that my playing ability doesn’t measure up to… yet.
It reminds me of work training courses when you learn something and then don’t get to use it for 12+ months and it’s largely forgotten, or it is with me.
Ultimately though, you do what you enjoy and if that’s theory then dive right in. There’s no single right way with all of this and you’re best off ignoring anyone who tells you there is
