I must say from the outset that I am not a fan, my parents dragged me to watch it when it was first released, I would have much preferred a James Bond film. Having said that I probably know most of the songs in the film.
Fast forward 60 years and we were visiting relatives and for some unknown reason for at least part of the time the film was on in the background but no sound. Must confess I was not aware how many of the songs involved a guitar. It would have been impolite to take too much notice of the guitar playing but some bits didnāt quite look right.
Does anybody know how realistic the guitar playing is in the film.
I would never admit this to my spouse but I love that. My wife absolutly loves this movie.
I know Andrews learned to play guitar to accompany her great voice just for this movie, Julie Andrews is a good singing and she did do all her own siging for the role. She described playing guitar and singing as difficult, thats all I got on the validity of her guitar parts.
Funny story, Before we were married my wife and I went chasing storms, doing health care down in the Caribbean and South America for a couple of years and each had a large backpaking pack worth of stuff to bring. I was shocked after we got down Dominica which is absolutly a 3rd world nation, like many we were visiting, and I realized she had packed both the Sound of Music and Goonies VHS tapes. I was like āHoney thats precious space and weight, you filled it with sound of music?ā She looked me in the eye and said
Hehe, this was one of the most popular, commercially successful, stand-the-test-of-time films ever made. Count your blessings she decided you were a ākeeperā
No idea as to the guitar playingā¦ Iām with Michael on that. Iād prefer to watch 007
My wife spotted Sound of Music was on for the annual Tv outing yesterday afternoon and started watching half way through.
I wasnāt really watching (honest!) but did catch myself singing along in the background at times!!
Sorry, didnāt concentrate on the guitar bits
Richard
I resisted the temptation last night to Google to see what it came up with but I did this morning. Interesting what came up first after the AI answer, my moment of fame perhaps.

First I didnāt know what you are talking about .
Is this the musical of the Trapp family??
Canāt be worse than the German film with Ruth Leuwerickā¦. Guitar or not .
Silvia @Silvia80
What strange title for the Italian version.
Sounds like a good quiz question, āwhat was the title of English version of the film whose Italian title when translated is ALL TOGETHER PASSIONATELYā
I suppose Julie Andrews did sing it in Italian and it was dubbed in.

I authorise you to listen on my behalf and report back.

PS I am starting to weaken I think I am going to have listen to the soundtrack, just donāt tell the family as I would never live it down.
I actually watched this with my family over the weekend and was surprised to find that I actually enjoyed it. I usually hate musicals, but for some reason the music here seemed to add to the movie rather than being an annoyance. Julie Andrews is a wonderful singer that hits every note with perfection.
As a guitar student that is currently working on ear training I found myself picking out intervals in a lot of the songs in the movie. Iād encourage anyone that is working on music theory or ear training to check it out.
or anyone wanting to improve their singing, the DoReMi solfege lesson is pretty useful Which will bring us back toā¦ Doh!
ā¦ the original query of the thread:
It is quite clear Miss Andrews is not playing the guitar for this clip.
Rob @Rider2040
I hope you are not wanting me to watch the film as homework.
Brian @brianlarsen
Do a ā¦. Was actually the first bit of the film I saw and didnāt think it looked right hence the topic.
