I did a transcription on Albert King’s audio track from the lessons and did pretty well with it. I tend to mark the notes in locations other than what is on the answer sheets. I recall reading recently on one of the JG lessons on transcribing, and wish I could find it again, that mentioned being able to hear the difference between playing something in one spot on the neck, and then in another using the same notes on different strings. I tried comparing, both by playing and recording to compare and ‘maybe hear a subtle difference’, but not a lot. How important is it really to play on a certain part of the neck, so long as it sounds the same and you can get to subsequent notes in a reasonable amount of time?
The placement on the neck is usually more about easier playing than that sound.
You’ll find the more you play you’ll develop farorite patterns and spots on the neck for each key you’re playing in.

@stitch Thanks Rick, I did the same on a few of the 5 riffs in a grade course recently. I nailed them, but Justin played them in a different spot further up the neck on a couple. One of the reasons I transcribed a lot of things near the 12th and 15th frets areas on strings 2, 3, and 4 was because if I had to go higher in tone, I didn’t want to have to play at the bridge. I could go to the 1st string, even without having to jump back to the minor pentatonic pattern 1 for A area.
