Hi guys
I’m fairly new to guitar but have changed strings a few times now. However this morning I chipped the nut on the B string slot while changing strings and I don’t know if its a problem or not or need to take it to a luthier. The string still stays in its slot fine, sounds normal and feels fine to play. I have attatched some photos of it for those of you far more knowledgable than me to take a look at.
If it sounds good then it is good. You won’t do any further damage by playing.
At least the string won’t get hung up in the string slot. Nice bevel on the ends of the slot…
I don’t know if it’ll effect playing or not. I’d think that if you have no issues playing, then it’d not be something to be concerned about. fwiw, I’m not a luthier. I could be wrong.
Does it stay in place when you bend B string now? If all works properly and tuning stability is ok, I wouldn’t worry.
Yeah, it stays in place if I bend it, tuned up fine and is staying in tune fine. Also sounds and feels fine so nothing to worry about then.
If you don’t notice any negative effects, I would just keep playing. This one here still works fine and I think there is a bit more than a chipped nut:
I’m not a luthier, but I have played and maintained my own guitars for many years. I have an observation and a couple of questions. When I magnify the pictures, it looks like the B and e strings are almost completely through the nut and the G string isn’t far behind. How old is the guitar and what brand/model is it? Depending on the answers to those questions, I might recommend having the nut replaced.
That is going to be just fine, it doesn’t affect the take off point for the string so it won’t impact your intonation.
