Itās about 10 notes, heres some help
So this morning I decided Iād take a peak at Justinās lesson to find the first note and then have a crack at transcribing. Cut a long story short, ended up using an isolated demo of the solo as it was a bit tricky to hear the solo notes clearly using the original slowed down in Reaper. And of course saw more than I wish I had when taking the first peak. That said, I think my ears are much better able to hear the right note when I had the isolated reference.
And hereās a first attempt to get it under the fingers. Next week Iāll need to sort out an appropriate BT.
@sairfingers Thanks, canāt do better than continue to improve. And dare I say, much room for improvement
And of course, Layla was the lady brushing her long blonde her.
My wife is not a fan of Wonderful Tonight. She doesnāt like the lyrics. Do I look good enough to go to the party? I need you to tell me I look good. Then despite the fact that everyone thinks I look good I have to worry if you feel alright. Then you get pissed/high and I have to drive you home and put you to bed. Then I have to listen to you telling me how wonderful I am.
Women. Donāt you just love them.
Well, itās all a somewhat tawdry tale is it not?
And her sister was married at some point to Mick Fleetwood as I recall but not the subject of song as far I know.
As many of you probably know if you watched my indulgent noodle posted over in AVOYP, May was not a good month for guitar in general and a complete hiatus in terms of my bending, vibrato, and licks practice. But Iāve had a couple of sessions to try and get back into it and recorded this short video of the two licks I am using to try and aid both technique and the hearing of pitch.
When I was playing, I felt the hand was rotating OK, looked like it when looking down. Looking at the video, still not great. My diagnosis is that in my starting position before bending a note my palm is too parallel to the neck. Does that seem reasonable? If so that is something to work on which will be a challenge since it is not a natural hand position for the way I usually play āleadā.
Hey David,
Good to see youāre getting back into it, and health is returning.
From what I can see, I can confirm your observations. The wrist/arm is not really rotating, meaning your fingers are doing all the work. Am working on it myself as you know, so just my novice observations.
Cheers, Shane
David
Good to see you are well enough to start bending again. Tone wise you are certainly getting there but as you say the action is still not quite right. I donāt think its the palm, as at the bottom of the bend it is angled down from the neck and in a good starting position. I think the issue is the thumb is not being used to help the rotation.
Have a look at Corey Congilio teaching this BB King lick, where he gives a good explanation of how to bend. Its one of the 30 Beginner Licks Iāve been working on and had been part of Blue Boy* but I dropped it at the last minute. See how much he engages the thumb.
Check out MDC2 and compare our thumbs, especially the bends up the neck at 2:30, not so much the early ones at the start. And I am still not squeezing to the same extent as Corey but getting there.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
Toby
@sclay Thanks for taking a look, the encouragement, and observation, Shane.
@TheMadman_tobyjenner Thanks for the thoughts, Toby. I notice what you mean re thumb. What a great lick to add to SOTW and WT. You had me scratching my head for a moment with MDC2, but got it in the end. Going to hop right on over to take a look.
Much appreciated Guys. This is exactly why I have managed to learn what I have learned and become the the player that I am ā¦ the support and hep of the Community, as if I was learning face-face with friends at a higher play-grade and the willingness to support somebody not yet as far down the road.
Hi David. I did read the conversation, but I have to acknowledge that I didnāt watch the videos as it isnāt something Iām currently working on, or I have any input to provide. Itās good this thread is around for reference when the time comes for doing some bending. I just wanted to comment that I think that keeping this conversation separated from your learning log as you at the end did worked well as it can be read and watched by itself. Inspiring also to look at all the effort youāve put to improve your bending skills.
