I shall be released full cover

Ok here goes, first full cover video. Hoping to play open mics at some point so would like to know how far off I am from that goal. Playing now for almost 18 months. Still finding the guitar taking away my attention from giving it my all vocally but happy I can get through a song or two now. Thanks for watching.

Alex… , Alex, what can I say… You are more than ready for your first Open Mic. Surely there are always some things to work on and to improve; but you did so well. That’s you singing btw. without giving it your full attention?

I have loved this song ever since I Iistened to Chrissie Hynde singing it on Dylan’s 30 years anniversary album.

Thanks for sharing. You sooo made me want to work on this song myself.

Thanks for the kind words! I never sing if front of anyone so I appreciate that. If you love this song as I do then worth checking out Jeff Buckley’s who I based this on, and also grace potter has an amazing one on youtube. All the best working on your own version!

… Can you guess, did I just listen to Buckley’s version? :innocent: I will have to do a Buckley deep dive, because there is so much more to him than just “Halleluja”.

My version… Let’s talk again in five years or so… :slightly_smiling_face:

Great job, particularly for 18 months of playing! As has been said, you are more than ready for an OM, although don’t expect to play and sing as well under that pressure. I’d start taking any opportunity you can to play and sing in front of others, even if just family and friends - it does get easier!

Sounded good, I like the use of electric guitar for this song. Well done.

EDIT: My own phaser laden rendition with a segue into Jimi’s “Angel” at the end.

You have a lovely voice. You should definitely sing for other people. It’s a hidden talent going to waste if you don’t.

Best, Ian

Don’t worry about the vocal. au contraire, you have a nice timbre and a lot of potential. This already sounds enjoyable.

The point I would work on before going on stage in the steady flow of the song. it has brief “hangs” or “lags”. Mostly when incorporating a little lead part or embellisment.
Try to get your chord-only version a solid as possible and gradually incorporate melodic complexity as a layer on top of solid rhythm and flow.

don’t see a song a line of blocks that must fit perfectly together but as layers, all as long as the song itself, sitting on top of each other with you in control of a timeline that moves forward in a smooth, solid fashion.

That would mean you might one to take the embellisments back a notch because***wait for it ** rhythm is king  . you throw in beautiful embellisments but your 'switching between those layers" still happens in a serial fashion instead of a free movement op and down those layers… and that’s why the flow lags here and there.

When could make the pragmatic shift to that approach, you will find it easier to gradually allow more vocal expression and complexity as well.

don’t get me wrong:

  • This is impressive after 18 months of work
  • you surely are on the path of gowing more and more!

Thanks for the feedback! Yes I see what you mean and I’ve been working like crazy on trying to get the embellishments to flow and without hitting the wrong string! As you heard still a few unintended bass notes in there when meant to be on the A string etc which although still in key didn’t sound as good.
I did at first learn this as the basic barre chords loop A,Bm7,C#m7 which is one of the easiest songs ever to play. The original has probably twice the embellishments that mine does and was played live. Really hard to know how to master this without just playing the songs over and over. I was thinking maybe switch to learning a variety of Hendrix progressions with licks between chords to broaden my experience with this. I think the hand mechanics and accuracy are a much bigger barrier than the theory of which notes link the chords.
Again much appreciated for watching and commenting.

Fantastic! Get on a stage!
