Ian's Learning (Christmas) Log

I’m going to use this log as a way to chart my progress towards getting a short Christmas set for the family in a couple of months time. I’ve played guitar since I was a teenager (and now much older!) but I’ve been making time for jazz guitar recently and learning a bit of theory via Justin’s Practical Music Theory course. I’m hoping I can make up in retirement for the many gaps in practice time caused by work and children. I tried Silent Night yesterday as I played that last year and I’ll post a video later this month when I’ve refined it.

Hi Ian,
Nice that you start one special for christmas …

Only two :scream: …yes it is a couple :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
A bit late at my level…in recent years I started when the sun was still high in the sky here, and not 2 months in advance…

Great ,I have done that one too 2 years ago…sometimes when I’m thinking about the year I play this thoughtlessly and then I hear from the living room…"heyyyy No Christmas song now with 25+ degrees ( we are not Australian )

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

You can combine these two beautifully…

Greetings and have fun ,Rogier

Looking forward to your log and recordings, Ian!
Me too, as I promised this year to learn a few christmas songs (3), I am looking into it - it’s not that easy to choose songs I like and which don’t have tons of jazz chords in them

Thanks and good to hear someone else is starting early. I bought tabs in a Christmas bundle from Sandra Sherman who is very good on her YouTube channel so I’m working from that resource mainly. I’ll do some jazzy stuff for my own enjoyment and some strum along ones for the grandchildren.

Thanks for the link to Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and I’ve added to my practice items. Ho, ho, ho.

We’re a bit spoilt for choice so need to focus on a few chosen tunes. I agree with you that it never really sounds right to play Christmas songs at other times of the year. Tannenbaum was evidently based on a 16th century Silesian folk tune by Melchior Franck (thanks Google!) and Melchior was one of the three kings in some traditions, so another Christmas connection.
