Never too early to start learning the fretboard I reckon, as long as it doesnt complicate or take the focus off your early learning too much.
I took Justin’s advice and learnt the notes on the first few frets, pretty much by rote. That will cover all your open chords. Then learn the top 2 strings, E and A. That’ll keep you busy for some time, before taking it further , down the track a bit. Take it nice and slow.
Justin has a great little app too called Note Trainer that only a few dollars, and is great to use at any time away from the guitar.

Cheers, Shane

I prefer to learn notes that I’m using often. It’s like learning password or phone number. When you use it every day, it becomes permanent.

I don’t like sticking fretboard stickers. They look very intimidating to me. Just be vary of what you are playing.

Following Justin’s course is suffice. He did guide when to focus on memorizing stuff.

What you really need to know is what the notes are up to the fifth fret, learn what the intervals are between the notes and then you have it.
Understanding it is much more important than learning it parrot fashion!

Hello Emile, welcome to your learning and to JustinGuitar.

As you progress through the beginner course, you will come to lessons in which Justin’s guides you what notes to begin learning, when and how.
Do not add extra complications to the mix.
Just follow the course and you will come to it.

I lean towards no on this question. It depends on how fast you are progressing I suppose but after 4 months of playing I was still learning the basics of playing - I could have learned the fretboard but I wouldn’t have had the skill to do anything with the knowledge. If you want to learn some notes then ok but concentrate on the notes you are using, if you’re learning chords then maybe learn which notes make up the chords you’re playing. I don’t see any value on knowing what the note is at the 17th fret of the B string at the click of the fingers - I know how to figure it out and that’s good enough for me for now (and I’ve been playing nearly 2 years)

Hi Emil. I taped a fretboard diagram to my guitar studio desk. Another exercise I have used is finding and picking all locations of each note up and down the fretboard. Step by step you’ll learn the patterns.

You’re in the right place! When you’re just starting out, it’s not necessary to memorize every note on the fretboard right away, but it can be helpful over time. For now, focus on open chords, reading tabs, and getting comfortable with the basics. As you progress, knowing the notes will help with things like soloing, finding chord shapes, and understanding music theory better. If you’re curious, you could start by learning the notes on the low E and A strings since those are key for power chords and barre chords later on.
