I’ve decided my Blues improvisation skills are terrible, so for the next 30 days I’m going to try and improve them. It’s one of my fundamental goals on guitar is to be able to improv blues over any key and backing track.
Learning songs for me is easier but it’s not the same as doing improv.
This will all be done in the beginning in A minor (start simple)
Prework:
I know the 5 patterns of A minor pentatonic and I know loads of licks in all the patterns which I have on a 11 pages GP file
I know how to do bends, vibrato etc. but putting it all together in a musical way is my Achilles heel.
I’ll upload a daily video of what I’ve practised etc.
Hi Rachel,
I’m currently nearing the end of class 3 Blim and, yeah, improvisation isn’t easy. All those licks - but how on earth to use them to create something musical??
It’ll be interesting to see what you come up with during this challenge. Your thoughts on how you go about it would be interesting too.
Excellent idea, Rachel. Very much in-keeping with Justin’s ethos about learning, be it scales or techniques. The ultimate aim is to make your music with what you have learned.
If I may make a suggestion . . .
Given no video in this topic, perhaps I could move it to your Learning Log. That is if you have one. If you don’t maybe this is a great moment to start one. You could record your insights and discoveries there throughout the challenge, and drop the related recordings here as you go.
I’ll work on the bends and see why they are not reaching the correct note. I use 10s as well, tried 9s but felt more comfortable with the 10s
Thank you for the feedback.
Was going to do another video today but went to dentist so I have a swollen cheek and not feeling up to it…
Tomorrow, I’ll upload another video
