Introduce yourself - right on!

Hi, My name is Maya and I’m picking the guitar back up again. I have done this so many times with no luck. I started playing back in junior high with Guitar as part of my curriculum in school.

I cut my right hand finger pretty badly in a bike chain in junior high and stopped playing. I hope this course can get me back into the groove. Other ways of learning just didn’t stick. I’m older now and really want to learn again and learn how to play Bossa Nova!

Hey Maya, welcome to the community. Like you, I had a false start and gave up. Came back and stuck to it. It’s so worth it. Yeah it’s hard at times, but the reward is excellent.

Hi Maya, welcome to the community. You have come to the right place to learn. You would probably need to finish Grade 2 before attempting Bossa Nova. I looked at a YouTube video to remind myself of the skills needed. You will need to practice finger style strums with alternating bass which is like the strum style with alternating bass that Justin demonstrates in the grade 2 song lesson video for Folsom Prison Blues. You also need to be familiar with syncopated strum patterns that Justin introduces in the grade 1 module 5 strumming tips lesson. Then I saw you need some more advanced chords, like an enhanced version of the C9 chord you use in grade 2 module 8. You’ll also benefit from the chord exploration lessons in grade 3. So take it one step at a time and go through Justin’s lessons and you’ll reach your goal of playing Bossa Nova songs. Have fun.

Hi Steve, thank you for the detailed information! Yeah I read that I need to take each layer at a time for bossa Nova. I’m going to learn Justin’s basics first. Things are starting to come back to me.

Just need to build those callasus back up!

Welcome to the community. I think you’ll find this place has great beginner and intermediate level guitar lessons. I still consider myself a newbie after a few years. Can’t play as long as I would like so I keep having to review often. That’s the nice thing about Justin’s lessons. You go at your on pace. Don’t put pressure on yourself and enjoy every minute as it comes. Everyone here is very supportive.

Hi Maya, welcome. Good you find your way back to playing guitar and have a clear objective in mind. Good also that you are working on the basics first. The distinguishing sound of some Latino-American rhythms is often due to a subtle and sometime not so subtle accent on certain beats instead of others, and of course the chord progressions used are different.
