Introduce yourself to your Solo Blues Peers šŸŽø

Just finishing up with a David Hamburger tutorial and then I’ll be digging into the Blues Solo series for a big of a change up. Looking forward to it. Aiming to become decent at fingerstyle blues… it’s a genre I don’t really listen to but love to play. A bit strange I guess.

Hi everyone - just signed up for this course (alongside finishing up BLIM3!). I think this bloke plays acoustic blues quite well - wouldn’t mind playing like him:

Hello all. I have been playing for two years next month. Just finishing off the Blues Immersion course which has been fabulous before getting stuck into this one. Vey much a beginner / learner but thrown myself in at the deep end and think I have done the right thing. Might not be very active until the BLIM course finishes next month. Hoping the community will be lively and lots of advice to catch up on by then. I have gravitated to Stevie Ray Vaughn for some reason - no idea why I have no history with his music - all good fun.

Hi, I’m Andrew

I started learning classical guitar when I was about 11 until I was 16 and then left if for a very long time. I’m now rapidly approaching 70 and still trying to learn how to play the blues.

I am principally a finger style player, but I have mainly been self learning Accoustic guitar from online courses for several years and learnt how to play chords, strum tunes and sing a bit. I get together with friends to play every 2-3 weeks - so I would categorise myself as a campfire strummer. I am trying to get back to my roots as a fingerstyle player and focus on the blues.

Hey everyone, some of you all know me from the site or from BLIM. So I have started working on this course today. I am really excited about it. It is actually suprise for me as I had basically conceded that I would be unable to afford any paid class work until sometime next year due to finacial obligations.

I made an off hand remark to Fanny about this, when talking about a gift card I have. And to my amazement Fanny and Justin offered me a spot using the Play It Forward program. I almost turned it down because I was embarrassed , but after talking to my wife and daughter I quickly realized that I am blessed, we are in need and she offered it for a reason. So I humbly accepted and I am very very appreciative of this kind gesture. It really means the world to me, as learning the guitar has changed my life a lot. It has actually saved my life and I know that sounds super cheesy but its no joke.

Anyway, I thought It was important to let everyone know how grateful I am for the play it forward, and especially for my second chance at a life and that I can make music again. doing it that under the fine tutelage of Justin and other instructors here is amazing. And to add to that, we are all lucky as is Justin himself to have the grace and compassion of someone like Fanny working hard to make these things possable.

I couldn’t this without them and this community. Its really something unique and amazing. So thanks to all of you as well.

Jason

Hi Andrew.
Welcome and good to meet you.
I am just a few years younger than you, but also revisiting the guitar journey after a dabble in classical about 50 years ago!
Now trying to make up for lost time by focussing on acoustic fingerpicking and the blues in particular.
Tried some online unstructured stuff over the last year or so, but decided I need to commit to something a bit more organised. Having enjoyed Justin’s approach with his introductory lessons and levels, think this course is ideal for me at the current time.
Going to get stuck in properly straight after Christmas when have a bit more time to commit to daily practice.
Good luck with it.
Cheers😊

I didn’t see a spot for the basic and didnt realize until now they were not part of the solo blue set so I guess I will post a video in here. I dont have quite all the the slides and a few of the phrases quite right. Not to mention there was a really bad storm outside and I was heavily distracted by my wonderful and ever loving wife who was waiting for me to finish and kept turning up the tv to get me moving. To cheak out stuff outside.:rofl:

So here it is, I really just dont know what happened with the final little pentatonic run.

I was soaking wet about 15 mins after I did this so I felt much better after being nice and warm.

Hi all. Just introducing myself. I’m Tom a retired carpenter from upstate NY in the Catskills. Been playing on an off for several years. Also have played other instruments. Looking forward to getting these patterns working for me.

Whats up Tom? Glad to see some more people are just starting. I really like this series of lessons also. The songs are super rad. See you in the individual song threads.

Nice to meet you Andrew, and welcome to a great place cheers HEC

I go back and forth between playing through the material on my acoustic vs. my electric.

I’ve been drifting towards wanting to play electric with my fingers. My former instructor did most of the time (jazz and blues guy) and I’ve been learning about all the great guitar players who have - and I am starting to hear it in songs now.

One thing I’m encountering that’s helpful in playing this way is when I start working on a new lick that may be harder on acoustic in part due to the heavier strings/higher tension, is that working on it on the electric first helps with the process of getting it on my acoustic. TBH, I’m still working through the boom bass with licks part of the intro material. But I’m taking it slowly because some of the skills are sorta at the edge of my abilities and I want to really absorb the material.

I picked this course up back in November, but neglected to introduce myself here!

I’m mainly a rock and metal enthusiast, but have been getting more into blues (and also more into the acoustic guitar) over time. (Is this what it’s like to get older? :joy:) I’ve only been practicing guitar in earnest for about three years, and so far I’ve basically just been a ā€œbedroom guitaristā€ – I was in the inaugural iteration of Justin’s Blues Immersion and really enjoyed that, but I’d really like to start getting our and jamming with other actual human beings, and I’m hoping the song studies and improv lessons in this course will help get me ready for that.

Incidentally, I’ve signed up to be a participant in the Traditional Blues Festival in Port Townsend, Washington (USA), which is happening in July. I’m a little intimidated given that I won’t know anyone there, but it’s a nice incentive to get my act together blues-wise over the next few months!

It’s a little bit of a bummer to see that the forums for this course aren’t very lively (yet), but I figure I might try recording myself playing Justin’s arrangements and uploading them here just for personal accountability if nothing else.
