Hey my name is ceilam from UK and been playing guitar for nearly 2 months now. I did lessons as a kid…we’ll only a few but I have ADHD so didn’t go well when I was a kid I loved retro music gear and I found a Walkman in a charity shop and next to it was a tape called dire straits alchemy…only £2 and the cover looked cool …was about 10 at time and I played that album every day and still do well not every day but it’s my dopamine boost . about 2 months ago I was watching my yearly watch of alchemy and I went on tik tok and Justin was there
…looked online and did some research and got a red stratocaster player 2 and put some Texas specials in also and a professional set up. With my ADHD I do struggle and I rushed though it all and forgot and then got overwhelmed with what to learn. And stopped playing for about 2 days …I do know the basic chords but not good at changing between then …some I found easy like C chord but I’m not fan of A
but I’m on new meds now and I’m starting from the start again and not gonna rush…I play with my fingers and took me long time to find a strumming style I liked .and I play with fingers not because of mark knopfler but I don’t like the sound of a pick .the sharpness puts a shiver down my spine and I did try loads of picks… probably spend £40 ISH just on picks …my other heros are Stevie ray and Eric Clapton. Albert king and bb king…I love the blues
Hi Ceilam
Welcome to JG, take your time learning, a little and often is a good way for some. Justin gave ve good advice whe he says ‘perfect practice is good practice’, in other words if it’s not right stop, slow down until it is right and the slowly speed up. Then progress is quicker, it took me a while to learn this.
Guitar looks great, have fun.
By the way check out Jeff Beck, he only played with his fingers and was one of the greatest guitarists.
Hi Ceilam,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun ![]()
And if something doesn’t work out, it won’t be because of your taste in music
, Justin will satisfy that hunger , and you can learn everything here what it takes to play like some of these guitar heroes…a little bit of patience and remember that everything can only really grow on a good basis grade 1/3 are the good foundation for all styles
…and the road on it has surprising beautiful and new music and exercises ![]()
Greetings,Rogier
Hi Celina, welcome to the community. Using finger strumming and finger picking you can play a lot without using a pick. When I want to avoid clicking while strumming I use my Dunlop 0.60 Nylon pick and hold loosely while strumming. If you are playing your Strat you can play using closed back head phones and shield your ears from the sound of the clicking pick.
You have picked a lot of my guitar heros, especially SRV. You have a really nice Strat that you can use to play music of your heros eventually. I hope you have a lot of fun as you follow Justin’s lessons, follow Justin’s practice routines and learn some songs.
Hi Ceilam, welcome to the community, take it easy, and as you have already found out take it slow. Most of all, have fun.
Hello Ceilam.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community.
Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.
Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.
Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.
We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.
That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.
Cheers. Richard
