Is it possible for Justin to add more visuals / diagrams embedded in the video lessons (prompted by PMT theory course triads lesson)?

I wish there was more visuals that emphasize the conversation in the videos. Just saying them into a void without really being able to visualize what you’re speaking makes it harder to register this information

Hi Alan @apysnack, can you elaborate on what sort of visuals you’d find useful, and what specifically you’re looking to have demonstrated? I can’t promise anyone will deliver that, but it’s possible someone will be able to point to an existing resource that demonstrates what you’re looking for.

Ideally, something that can visually show the notes being described when talking about music theory and their relationships to each other. For example, if the discussion is about how an augmented triad is the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes with the 5th note being sharpened, ideally I’d like to see a video that physically shows all the keys of the scale (or all the keys period) and highlights the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes and then shows the new result by highlighting the new notes

Unfortunately it’s harder to visualize theory on a guitar than it is on a piano. I know Justin probably knows all the notes and which fret/string they’re in, but as a beginner, it’s a bit hard to visualize that sort of thing

thanks for your time!

@apysnack Alan you have posted this in the PMT Section so I am going to assume you are taking the course. Everything you have asked for is in the PMT Workbook grade 4.1. Have you not downloaded it? It’s 23 pages of diagram and worksheets that go with the video lessons.

I’ll just be clearer: I would like to see visuals incorporated in the videos themselves that visually represent the discussion that Justin is having in his videos. If that’s something that there’s no interest in doing, that’s fine. It’s just my opinion and a suggestion for something that I feel would significantly improve the quality of these videos.

You need to read the notes under the Learn More tab in conjunction with the video.

in what way does that resolve my request for “visuals incorporated in the videos themselves that visually represent the discussion that justin is having in his videos”??

It doesn’t. It was my roundabout way of saying “Justin has provided the necessary information in two places- videos and notes. It’s up to you to combine the two”.

Hi Alan @apysnack,

I feel your pain! And I have a feeling Justin does as well… While I certainly don’t speak for him (or anyone but myself of course!), I suspect he wants us to work this stuff out ourselves so we will learn the notes on the fretboard. In an earlier lesson we learned all the notes on the first five frets, and in a subsequent lesson (as I recall) we learned all the notes on the strings five and six. The notes on string one are the same as on string six, so we’re left with a gap on strings two, three, and four. To be sure: I still can’t name every note that someone points to on the fretboard, but with these tools I can figure them all out pretty quickly. FWIW - I also never learned my 7 and 8 multiplication tables, and to this day sometimes fall back on my “tricks” to come up with the answers. It hasn’t caused me any problems in life.

For me, this lesson was a real speedbump. I spent a lot of time learning the triads on the first three strings, memorizing first the root notes then the other two. I still don’t know them by rote. I’ve set this aside for now, and moved on other theory topics. Not to say I’ve abandoned it, just that I realize this is going to take me a very long time to get in my head. I know something will come up that will require me to return to this, and I’ll do it with fresh eyes, ears, and neurons.

All to say: Thank you for making the suggestion - this is the only way things improve (even when our suggestions are not taken). To me, your request is reasonable and legitimate, I just suspect that Justin’s pedagogical process is taking a different route.

Judi, I suspect the main reason is the significant amount of additional video editing that would go into adding the requested visuals to Justin’s videos.

Hi Alan, I’m sure your suggestion for improvement will be considered by the team. Whether it is actioned or not will come down to them but I’m sure they appreciate every suggestion for improvement they receive. All Chris was suggesting was that it may help you watching the videos alongside the written material.

@Richard_close2u you may want to tidy this thread up a little bit

Alan.
I am not able to speak on behalf of Justin, his thinking and decision making in terms of what he does and does not present visually in the actual video pane vs what he adds to the Learn More page as written and visual content.

I do know that he often encourages people to build upon his teaching and undertake the work of self-directed study and exploration for themselves - of course supported by the guidance and knowledge he provides.

It may be that some students with different needs in terms of their preferred learning style are not wholly catered for in his every presentation. That is no doubt a case of not being able to please everyone at the same time.

Some of Justin’s more recent video lessons have contained additional graphics or visuals. Perhaps your suggestion will lead to more of this.

I think it unlikely that Justin will retrofit existing video lessons with additional visual content as the work hours would be extraordinarily high and it is just not practical to take weeks and months back-stepping when he has so many forward-facing projects to devote his time to.
