Oh no. I seriously didnāt know that there are skunks in Canada as, didnāt think that they could survive that far North. Luckily no porcupines in here (Finland) either.
Did your dogs stay away from skunks and porcupines after that? We had a Bobtail, when I was a teenager, and when he was a puppy he fell into the river when playing with my friendās dogs. It was a small and calm river, so of course he managed to swim just fine just like my friendās dogs. But it must have been such a shock, he never ever swam againā¦
Porcupines are the worst for dogs. We had a friend who had a beautiful Rottweiler that got into a porcupine and it became a mission for the dog to try and kill every porcupine it came across. After numerous times to the vet getting quills out of it face they had to put him down because a quill had worked it way though the dogs sinus cavity into it skull.
If you live in Toronto Canada youāll be familiar with the Garbage Pandas the roam freely at night getting into all kinds of trouble. @Mari63 do you have a raccoons problem in Thunder Bay or is it just a TO thing?
Casey never got skunked again, but Jake had a much milder attack after the first one. We had ~ 4 acres fenced in on our country property and we used to laugh because if the dogs were barking at something after that Jake would be nose to the fence barking, and Casey would be safe on the deck barking! I guess thatās why he had several incidents and she had just the one!!No future porcupine incidents thankfully. We were 12 years in the country, so it could have been much worse!
We have no raccoon problem at all in Thunder Bay, Rick, and I hope it stays that way!!
Sad for your friend to lose their dog like that Sometimes something like that keeps dogs away from the danger forever, and sometimes it unfortunately means they forever want to eliminate it
He spent almost the whole day lounging in the front yard in the shade. Heād get up and munch on the grass and hedge then lay down again. Usually they only stick around for an hour or two then move on. It was pretty hot yesterday so I guess the shade of the tree felt nice and cool.
Just an update on the deer if anyone is still interested. Laying right in front of the front door of the the house on a cool rainy morning. Took the picture trough the window of the doer so itās not that clear. It little guy is starting to loose his spots already. Looks really healthy, still time lots of time to grow before winter sets in.
Certainly seems to have settled in by the looks for things. What a wonderful creature to have on the doorstep ! Our wild ābunniesā are now fully grown and I only grab a quick glance, on the occasional morning now when I go down to open up the chicken run. One is hanging around the place but very skittish. Making the most of each sighting before the hunting season starts at the end of September.
Luckily for these deer they donāt have to worry about hunting season. They live right in town all year. A few years ago someone shot one in the back with an arrow but didnāt kill it. It lived with the arrow in itās back for the whole summer. Donāt know if it finally dislodged itās self or broke off.
The biggest killer of these town deer is getting hit by cars in the winter when the roads are icy. Their pointed hooves donāt work very well on icy roads.
I totally understand the attraction to being close enough to nature to pet it.
Bet that one didnāt live though hunting season. once they imprint on people they tend to become easy prey for hunters. Hopefully you live where hunters canāt get to it.
We donāt feed the ones that hang around our place. Try to keep them as wild as possible for their own safety.
thereās a long and drawn out story to this one. Neighbors dauther found it standing next to itās dead mother for like 3-4 days (hit by a car, fawn still had umbilical hanging) and she brought it home and let it stay in the barn, brought food to it etc. we live in a pretty rural area and they tried unsuccessfully to get it to be part of the herds nearby, dropping it off at the back of the property (they have hundreds of acres behind us). he wouldnt leave and stayed hanging around their land and slept in their barn. sadly Iām sure he has not made very long, those pics were over a year ago. it was an especially nice experience for my daughter (she has down syndrome) so there was that positive that came from it.
