Jimi Hendrix - Jungle (cover by a beginner)

Hi everyone!

It’s been 9 months since I started playing guitar. A week ago I decided to learn my first Jimi Hendrix song from start to finish.

Took me a few days to get it down part-by-part and then a few more to be able to play it from start to finish.

It’s not that great, there is a few quite obvious mistakes in the timing at the end where the rhythm picks up and a few wrong or muted hammer-ons, but it’s still a work in progress and I’m sure I’ll clean them up eventually.

I tried learning it by ear, but some parts were quite difficult for me so I had to learn them via a YT lesson.

It’s not exactly the same as the original song, I’ve changed some minor stuff on the go, but I think that’s fine, given the song is a Hendrix jam in Am and he probably never played it again haha.

This is the first time I ever share myself playing, so any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Jimi Hendrix - Jungle (a beginner cover)

Guitar is a Fender Player Series Stratocaster on the neck pickup

Amp is Boss Katana gen 3 (“Pushed” channel, with UniVibe on and 25w setting)

Mic is, well, my iPhone 15 set right next to my amp, recorded via voice memo

I know it’s not that big of a deal, but given that in July 2024 I couldn’t hold a Dm open chord and now, not even an year later I’m able to cover an entire Hendrix song from start to finish by memory is a massive achievement for me.

I can’t wait to look back to this recording and think “oh god it’s so bad, I can play it so much better now”

Hi Teodor.
Kudos to you for making your first share of a recording … and just one year in attempting Hendrix.
No critique from me today as I just want to say well done and keep up the good work. You’re obviously working hard and doing good things to help you learn.

Very impressive work Teodore! It’s clear you have some buit-in musicality. Solid rhythm. At 9 months, I imagine most of us were stumbling through chord change exercises and learning scales, not covering Hendrix. :+1:

An excellent job: even in the latter part of the piece your rhythm is still quite steady. The hammer-ons will improve; do practice getting them right at a slower pace. Well done.

It’ll could be more like,

Hey, I really pushed myself hard and it shows. I managed to go from not knowing a D chord to a skill set and played a complex song that sounds good---in only nine months. I'm doing pretty well--I'm so glad I began this journey

You’re an inspiration to a fellow 9monther! Thanks.

Absolutely amazing. I can’t believe that you have only been playing for 9 months, that gives me hope and pushes me to go and practice more.

Most impressive, esp. for just 9 months?? Holy cow. Jimi, move over! Let Teodor Tsanov show you how it’s done

Teodor, I tried the link and got ‘file not found’?

Same here

It seems like the audio hosting site deleted it after a few days…

I uploaded a new link, you should be able to hear it now

Thanks for re-uploading, Teodor. That sounded great, excellent Hendrix-esque tone.

For sharing, perhaps consider a standard cloud-based file share like Google Drive or DropBox. Alternatively, you can use SoundCloud and upload an audio there which is how I started before switching to YouTube.

I’ll use these in the future, thanks for the tip.

That’s amazing. I’m 2 years in and no way near that level yet.

Great playing.
