Hey Justin people!
It’s been (yet again) a long time since I posted a new cover. As some of you perhaps know, I work in the video games industry… and we recently released our latest game “James Bond: First Light”. That was a very tough release, and I never worked more overtime in my entire working career - and it left little time for recording
But luckily the game was released and very well received!
I also felt that I had kind of plateaued a little bit wrt to my technique and how all my covers sounded. So I have been spending almost a full year taking a very challenging course on Yngwie Malmsteen style and technique. I don’t actually particularly enjoy his playing, if I’m being totally honest, but I was interested in learning economy picking, sweep picking and just overall getting my technique in better shape.
The course is extremely challenging, and it was actually a bit hard to see progress. Because as I “conquered” a small technique or exercise, the next would simply be even more difficult ![]()
BUT - I recently bought myself an Ibanez guitar - the Joe Satriani signature one with a sustainiac pickup etc. Joe Satriani I have been a long time fan of! Of all the “instrumental shredders”, I feel he is the most melodic and musical.
Summer Song has been a bit of a “dreamer song” for me for a long time, but honestly I could not pull it off. But now, with the new guitar, I gave it another try… and it turns out that all the hard work on technique HAVE had an effect - because now this stuff was actually doable!
I’m quite happy with how this one turned out, and I hope you’ll like the recording as well. As always I’ll post a link to the full mix, and then also a link to the “guitar only” render where you can clearly hear what tones I used and how the parts go. One thing I learned from doing this cover is how good a rhythm guitarist Joe also is… I really like the parts that goes under the lead work on this one…
To clarify the details a bit: I play all the guitar layers, but used drums and bass tracks from karaoke-version.com. No AI was (of course) used. Tones are from my Soldano X88IR tube preamp and effects from my Fractal Axe FX3. For rhythm tracks I used my ESP LTD 1000 Deluxe with the Evertune bridge to keep things perfect in tune. Rhythm is double tracked and hard-panned left/right. All lead parts is using my Ibanez JS2480.
