"Jolene" R.I.P Dolly Parton

“Jolene” is my jam! I started working on it the day she died. It’s been on my list for about a year but I knew it’d be tricky so I avoided it. Wish I’d done it while she was still here😢 I would’ve tagged her and hoped to get a like from her. I have so much respect and admiration for Dolly Parton who played and sung this song standing up with long acrylic nails cause I struggled sitting down with nubs and got nowhere close to hers. I think her guitar playing skills are out of this world and never get enough attention💅

Really lovely version, nicely done. You have that tricky picking pattern down pretty well, and the singing is exceptional!!

Lovely performance Sonyal.
I hear an almost ethereal sound, particularly during the second vox passages.
R.I.P. Dolly :broken_heart:

That was a beautiful performance, as always, Sonyal
I also have much respect and admiration for Dolly Parton. She was so talented and a beautiful person.
I’m sure she would have liked this :sparkles:

Thank you @dfrazz It’s super tricky switching between the two different rifts and singing. Definitely makes me appreciate Dollys talent even more.

Thanks @Willsie thats a really nice compliment😊

Appreciate you @AvalonJ I was surprised I haven’t seen many Dolly covers on here since I feel like her guitar skills are very impressive. I think she got a lot of folks licked! She’s someone I looked into in the beginning of my guitar playing journey to see examples of women singing and playing guitar. Thanks for saying she’d like it, means a lot :hugs:

Thank you @pkboo3 this is a really fun song to play! I find that sometimes with a challenging song I will get frustrated and not want to play it anymore after I’ve gotten the hang of it but this one is different for me. I read somewhere that a well known country music producer was asked what his take was on the perfect song and he named “Jolene” bc of the arrangement, singing and guitar playing and he might have a point.

Check this out if you havent seen her play it live:

I really like your cover of Jolene . I was trying to learn it but ever since she passed it has been really hard for mecto practice it. I can’t get that picking pattern down

Thanks so much @ggeilman It’s easily one of the hardest songs I’ve learned to play so far and I still don’t have it exactly right so its one of those “grower” songs for sure. The A chord is a different riff that the C and G chord excep when you sing the chorus. When I look at her play it, she’s playing a 3rd riff for her g chord which is insane plus adding turnarounds and such throughout its crazy good! Keep at it, it’ll click😊
