This is one of the songs I learned while playing Rocksmith. I figured it would be a good one to test out recording with a new audio interface. I recorded video and audio separately and I think I may not have them lined up quite right, but figured it’s good enough for a first effort.
I have my Boss Katana going directly into the interface here so I could record the effects from the Katana, which include a touch of Blues Driver and a touch of Reverb. I know the Katana has a USB interface you can use directly, but the Gen 3 version doesn’t seem to work quite right with Linux yet, which is what I use for my recording laptop.
Have you considered to play and record this over a backing track? This would help give the guitar track some context.
From playing perspective, nothing to add. Sounded all fine, tone was chosen well, too. You switch nicely back and forth between picking notes and rhythm. Cool stuff!
Thanks Lisa! I like the idea of playing/recording it with a backing track. There are a few other songs that I sometimes play along with the original recording but haven’t done that with this one yet outside of playing it in Rocksmith.
@deiussum Hi Dan, I thought that you did a good job on this. Your riffs were fluid and in rhythm and the tone sounded good. I wasn’t familiar with the song so I watched and listened to the official video in YouTube. The impression I got for the tone for the video was early Jimi Hendrix. I’m not a tone expert and others could help me here, but I think a little fuzz effect added to the tone setup would add to the authenticity of the sound. I agree with @Lisa_S that a backing track would help give your playing some context. I know, because that is what I have been told when I posted an electric guitar AVOYP From listening to the Black Keys I think that all you would need to add is the drum track. You could use the free Moises app to pull out the drums from a recording of the song on your phone or iPad, save as an MP3 or mp4 file and bring into your DAW to record against. I’ll admit that I just learned how to do this recently. I hope you have a lot of fun as you learn new things.
Thanks Steve! I’ve seen a few mentions of the Moises app on here but haven’t tried it out yet myself. Thanks for the tone suggestions. I wasn’t trying to replicate the exact tone, but I always enjoy playing with different settings.
The Black Keys are basically just a drummer and a guitarist/singer, so as you said having the drums would probably be all I’d really need to fill it out a bit. I think that might be part of the reason I really enjoyed playing their songs on Rocksmith because I felt like the guitar part tends to sound pretty decent without having to have a full band accompanying it.
I had heard about Moises for a couple of years in the community but had assumed that it would take some time to learn or be expensive. I tried it recently and was surprised to find that it was as easy to use as the Justin Guitar app and free for processing a few songs each month. You just select your song and click a button and the app generates a list of the separate tracks like voice, guitar, bass and drum. You can save the tracks as mp3 files. Note; I went back and checked and was surprised that you can use songs recorded with your devices microphone.
