Just saying hello - Chris an older player

Hello. I’m an older player who doesn’t have much experience with the guitar. I tried to learn decades ago but life got in the way. At the beginning of this year, I decided to try and learn again. I have time and space to devote to learning. So that’s me. I’ve been practicing nearly every day since January 2nd. My progress has been slow but steady. I’m certainly not a fast learner but that’s okay.
That’s the joy of it. Even though I’m a beginner, I love playing. Old rock and blues is my thing.
I’ve been concentrating on the scales and the chords and where all the notes are. Slow progress.
One day at a time :guitar::zany_face:

Hi Chris welcome to the oldies club slow and steady wins the race, at the moment I am into Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison and Marc Bolan T Rex.

Same. Good luck.

Hey Chris. Welcome to the community. I had my birthday recently and am nearing 70. Wow, where did the years go.

Songs songs songs makes all the difference. Find a simple song, esp if it’s A E & D with Justin’s fingering of A making it easier to do the chord changes. Learn it all the way through. When I did that it was such a boost to my confidence that I really took off after that.

Don’t spend too much time on scales. They are useful to know the pattern but otherwise many waste far too many hours on them. Move to playing simple solos along to a backing track sooner rather than later.

The cool thing is very soon you’ll have the reward of being able to play a song or two or three and that’s a stunning accomplishment.

Hello Chris,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

You learn the guitar fastest by doing it slowly so keep on going what you do :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Hello Chris
Nice to meet you
For sure, slow and steady is the way to do it, and actually end up making faster progress. Having that joy for it also goes a long way  :guitar:

Slow learning is the lot of most of us more elderly.

It’s very helpful to play with other people though. Check out your local u3a community, you might find a ‘guitar group’ you could join.

Good luck with it all, happy strumming!

I’m a member of my local U3A guitar group and it’s lots of fun. The leader of the group is excellent at tabbing out the songs for us. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it too. Enjoy the journey. I’m an oldie acoustic guitar player. 79 years young.

Hello Chris and a warm welcome to our Community!

That’s all what it takes to learning guitar and become a confident player

Hi Chris,
Another oldie here, that’s the name of the game,
enjoyment,
we’ve all had to start somewhere, I started. Started early 2000, on acoustic guitar
found Justin, in his early days, enjoy his lessons, very easy to understand and follow.
Still class myself as above average beginner.
Should practise a lot more, now semi retired, bought myself a smaller dreadnought, Cort Guitar, hoping to it’ll help, downsizing from a Maton
Enjoy your journey

Hi Chris, welcome to the community. Have fun, learn some songs and you will gradually advance in your guitar journey.

Hello Chris.

Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. There a whole host of golden oldies over in the dog house.
Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.

Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard
