Late introduction from Wolfgang - a German guy

As I just realised when I tried to post a comment on the forum in response to a not entirely fair comment on the ‘Bridge over troubled water’ video, I hadn’t introduced myself after registering here - which I’m happy to do now:

I was born in 1968, live in Cologne, Germany and started playing again at the beginning of 2022 after a break of forty years. But what do you mean by a break - I learnt a few chords as a teenager, strummed a few songs and never really understood how to find my way around the fretboard. When the money I had saved was used to buy a Commodore 64 instead of an electric guitar in 1983, that was the end of my guitar career  I don’t really know what motivated me to start recording again. I had ‘found’ my old classical guitar in the cellar and decided to put new strings on it and replace the broken mechanism - even if it could only be used as a decorative piece. BUT NO … it grabbed me … but after 4 weeks of impossible string action it was clear that it wouldn’t work that way. So I went to the music shop, tried everything and bought a PRS Standard 24. Since then I’ve been practising almost every day. I have no idea what virus I caught. Firstly, all the great courses from Justin and also from a German online teacher, Horst Keller. Like Justin, highly recommended!

Where do I stand today: I’ve got some
Campfire (Eleanor Rigby, House of the Rising Sun, Mary did you know, San Francisco , Mull of Kintyre, Nowhere Man) - mostly strumming

and Campfire+ songs (Wish you where here, Yesterday, Wonderful Tonight, Stairway to Heaven, Greensleeves / What Child is this, Bumbin’, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Loan Me A Dime, Autum Leaves, Feel Like Makin’ Love, The Sound of Silence , Blackbird) - some fingerpicking, some chord melodies, some pop/soul arreangemants and 2-3 as simple jazz chord melodies

and I’m working on some Developer pieces (Fly me to the moon, Still got the Blues, Let it be, Summertime, Mediterranean Sundance, Samba Pa Ti, Happy Xmas (War is Over), Imagine, Bridge over troubled water) - here, besides chord melodies of course, focus on the solos and comping

Apart from that I try to improvise on blues progressions which is a lot of fun. The new blues immersion course could also be interesting next year. But first I’m going to get into jazz and I’ve bought the book by Peter Autschbach (probably only available in German) and I’ll see how I get on with it.

Thx @brianlarsen ‘strum’ is much better but hopefully I improve also my picking

Thx @jgottwals I’m glad you like the songs.

I was wondering if there was a better place here in the forum where I could post this, but it seems appropriate in the introduction post.

However, it is only a snapshot. So while searching the forum I came across the ‘Learning Log’ section. It would certainly make sense to update it there, or is there a better place? My idea would be to have an overview of Campfire+ and Developer songs with source information for learning instead of a personalized list. This is in the spirit of crowdsourcing, so that all forum participants here could possibly use it as a reference work in the forum.

What do you think? Does it make sense? Is there something like that already?

btw I currently track it in an Google sheet like this - might be also an option for the whole approach:

Thx @DeltaTyne I’m glad you liked my town. It is of course not the prettiest place but the people are open minded and warm

Hey Wolfgang , that spreadsheet is quite an impressive compilation of practice hours. . .the learning log thread here in the community is most commonly used by community members as a kind of “progress diary” on thier overall guitar progress and the process(es) they undertake to learning specific songs or techniques. That said, it seems to me that each learning log has an individual flavour or tone depending on who is doing it, etc. Not sure that the resources for learning you mention are the best place for this.

There are of course issues with the sharing of copyrighted materials which can get to be complicated for the people charged with moderating these pages as we cannot present materials for which there are copyright “blocks” in place. I am certainly not the person to speak about the ins and outs of this copyright issue but I am guessing that information source outside of the Justinguitar webpage might come under some form of restriction. Sadly, this is an issue.

So, in summary, I would say that sharing your progress towards mastering the tunes on your list via video or written posts in a learning log is certainly fine, I am not so sure that “resources for learning” that come from outside the JGC (Justin Guitar Community) wouldn’t get “flagged” for copyright issues and have to be removed by a moderator. Again, I am NOT familiar with the details of this aspect of the management of these pages so I may be completely off here.

EIther way, I reckon you’ve got your work cut out for you with that list of tunes and I hope you enjoy the process of getting them all “in the bag” as we say.

Best of luck and we’ll certainly see you around these pages in future.
Cheers
J
