Thx @brianlarsen ‘strum’ is much better but hopefully I improve also my picking

Thx @jgottwals I’m glad you like the songs.

I was wondering if there was a better place here in the forum where I could post this, but it seems appropriate in the introduction post.

However, it is only a snapshot. So while searching the forum I came across the ‘Learning Log’ section. It would certainly make sense to update it there, or is there a better place? My idea would be to have an overview of Campfire+ and Developer songs with source information for learning instead of a personalized list. This is in the spirit of crowdsourcing, so that all forum participants here could possibly use it as a reference work in the forum.

What do you think? Does it make sense? Is there something like that already?

btw I currently track it in an Google sheet like this - might be also an option for the whole approach:

Thx @DeltaTyne I’m glad you liked my town. It is of course not the prettiest place but the people are open minded and warm

Hey Wolfgang , that spreadsheet is quite an impressive compilation of practice hours. . .the learning log thread here in the community is most commonly used by community members as a kind of “progress diary” on thier overall guitar progress and the process(es) they undertake to learning specific songs or techniques. That said, it seems to me that each learning log has an individual flavour or tone depending on who is doing it, etc. Not sure that the resources for learning you mention are the best place for this.

There are of course issues with the sharing of copyrighted materials which can get to be complicated for the people charged with moderating these pages as we cannot present materials for which there are copyright “blocks” in place. I am certainly not the person to speak about the ins and outs of this copyright issue but I am guessing that information source outside of the Justinguitar webpage might come under some form of restriction. Sadly, this is an issue.

So, in summary, I would say that sharing your progress towards mastering the tunes on your list via video or written posts in a learning log is certainly fine, I am not so sure that “resources for learning” that come from outside the JGC (Justin Guitar Community) wouldn’t get “flagged” for copyright issues and have to be removed by a moderator. Again, I am NOT familiar with the details of this aspect of the management of these pages so I may be completely off here.

EIther way, I reckon you’ve got your work cut out for you with that list of tunes and I hope you enjoy the process of getting them all “in the bag” as we say.

Best of luck and we’ll certainly see you around these pages in future.
Cheers
J

Ah, another PRS convert! Welcome Wolfgang! Glad you joined us.

Guten Tag Wolfgang! I speak a little German. I studied the language for three years as my ancestors are from Deutschland. Beautiful country!

You mentioned that you were not sure what virus you had caught causing you to buy a new guitar and jumping back on the bandwagon. I’m not a doctor but you have caught a terrible virus known as GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome). Plan on buying many more guitars in your future! LOL! :joy:

Take care mein Freund. Looking forward to seeing your posts here. Strum on!

Thank you Rebecca. Yes it fits best under my fingers and so this year I also bought an PRS SE Hollowbody II Piezo as a very versatile instrument

Thanks Dave. Yes GAS - but still in an reasonable way; only a new concert (Cordoba Maple 14) and this year a PRS SE Hollowbody II Piezo, but of course some more gear like Mighty Plug, Line6 Catalyst and the Spark Go, very good Headphones and all the other small necessities.

Thanks Dominique. Have a lot of fun with Horst’s material - in his words “keep getting a little better very day”

Thank you Jeremy for your insights. I might have been misunderstood since I just thought about a general list (like mine) for orientation with links/hints to external material and not storing any copyrighted material. Surely this would be okay. But as long as I think about the idea it seems to me, that such a list might be not really helpful because of everyone’s personal taste which leads to such a list in the mentioned Log space.

But another thought I had was when am I good enough to put a song from the developer category to the campfire+ - surely this is totally subjective. I currently are fine with this if I feel free to play and sing a song in a friends/family environment.

Currently I spend much more time (besides technical training) on the latest developer songs and I recognized that if I do not play the others for some time of course I am not anymore as good in playing. E.g. the whole Stairway to Heaven which I started early in 2023 is a lot of material and you might not really forget it (since your fingers know how to do it after hundreds of repetitions) but the quality isn’t as good as it was when it was freshly learned -obviously. So every campfire+ song need some repetition over time.

But there are some songs like e.g. Samba Pa Ti where it works fine in the melodic first and rhythmic second part and also the first part of the more “free” solo but I still struggle with the quicker part at the end. So I play along the original or backing track up to the this point (ca. 3:30) and then I can only play it in slow motion anymore. Obviously it takes a lot more of development, but the rest is “campfire+”

So you and the others, how do you handle it to improve- handle the campfire+ part as a separate song (if the song structure fits this approach) to keep it in your repertoire and work on the rest separately? What way have been successful in the past to improve the developers but not to loose the campfire+ - regarding restricted affordable time?

Hi Wolfgang,

Welcome to the community forum. :grinning:

At the end of my every practice sesssion I devote time to going through a few songs of my “repetoire” usually on a rotating basis so I don’t forget them. If a song is played here it’s because I can play it automatically and without much thought. I try to cycle them through often enough so that if I want to play a given tune, then I can do so without having to worry about messing it up.

My developer songs/wishlist songs stay in my practice routines until I have the guitar and vocal parts down without having to concentrate too hard on either. Makes for slow additions to the repetoire but usually I am confident in playing them once they’re there.

That’s my approach. It’s not very precise, but it works for me.

Now I’m really jealous, I was looking at a blue PRS Hollowbody but decided I should wait till I graduate from Grade 2 (which is taking me forever!) and instead bought new stereo speakers and receiver for listening to music. Speakers sound great, receiver still in on the way.

Enjoy both those fine instruments!

Thx Jeremy, this seems to be the same procedure as I handle it
