I’m a beginner im left-handed. Where do I start and where do I go?
Hi James. Welcome to the community. I am not left handed so I will let some of the left handed guitarists in the community provide good advice. I will say that you should start at the beginning with the first lessons. You might enjoy the Nitsuj practice videos that Justin has in the beginning lessons in the website. He learns to play guitar left handed and records his progress starting from module 1.
Ok good because before I joined up, I heard that he has left hand instruction too. Thank you so much for replying.
The Nitsuj lessons are at the list of Grade 1 modules on the website.:
These are all practrice sessions for all the grade 1 modules.
You’ll still have to take the regular lesson for the beginner course the Nitsuj videos are of Justin practicing left handed. There are no lefthand specific lessons.
My wife is left handed and plays left handed and had no problems following Justin’s beginner course.
Hi James
Welcome to the community. You will get lots of help from people here. I’m left handed and I was surprised just how many of us left handers there are on the forum. Some, like me, just play a right handed guitar. There are disadvantages to this but also definite advantages. Some play a left handed guitar.
Concerning learning, it doesn’t change anything whether you are left or right handed. Actually I noticed in a lot of videos Justin refers to the strumming hand and the fretting hand, which is good because if he referred to left and right, you would have to remember that it’s reversed for you.
The advantages of a lefty playing a rh guitar are that there’s more choice of guitars, it’s easier to make the chord shapes when you start. The disadvantage can be that since the rh then has to do strumming and finger picking, this can be more challenging. For example, I find it difficult to strum fast.
Good luck with the lessons. It’s a great course.
Best, Ian
Ps the left hand videos are not instruction but to demonstrate how it is to learn the guitar and what some of the challenges can be. They show Justin practicing.
Hello @Jupiter62 and welcome to the Community and JustinGuitar.
There are preferences you could choose to assist with left handed learning.
On the website home page, go down to Account …
Preferences …
Then Left handed chord box …
Welcome aboard, the only disadvantage of being a lefty is that there are less guitars to choose from and quite often they will have to be ordered in for you. Don’t let that put you off, if you’re not to a reasonable degree ambidextrous then don’t think of going down the road of learning right handed.
Welcome fellow lefty!
Don’t be discouraged by this “disadvantage”. Many of the great guitarplayers are and were lefties…
Have a look here for some faboulous lefty resources: https://leftyfretz.com/
And, what’s more, we have an advantage. If your teachter, say Justin, is right handed, then you get a mirror image, which makes it a lot easier to see what’s going on on the fretboard.
Have a look here why we have serveral advantages.
9 Killer Left Handed Guitar Advantages
Reading chord boxes, diagrams etc is hard, you think? Turn them up side down and you’ll have a lefty diagram. (Been doing that one for years now)
It’s true that manufacturers don’t all have lefty guitars or produce less versions.
But that didn’t stop me from building a nice collection over the years.
Take a look at Fender, Ibanez, Gibson, etc… Check out Reverb or similar sites.
And above all, have fun playing!!
Hi fellow lefty!
The lessons on te site often give you the option to switch to left handed.
Though, as a lefty, it’s a good idea to create your own lefty chord and scale book.
You coul just buy one with a bunch of stuff in it but it won’t have the same effect.
it will be too much at once, you didn’t make it yourself and the chords and scales won’t stick as easily
btw, I learned a lot from Justins lesosns back in the day, as a lefty.
Doing the mirror thing in front of the screen actually worked quite well!
Do you have a guitar yet?
