Only a short clip but I’ve been working on my singing and playing, any feedback, does my singing sound bad as this song is very high for me
Hi Alex, anybody that gets up and plays and sings I say is good because it takes some doing, I think you answered your own question it is too high have you ever thought about changing the key or using a capo, or is it even possible to sing in a different key try them all that’s what it’s about finding different sounds but well done my friend cheers Hec
Nice job with that. The strumming and guitar was great. Repeating what was said, but anyone who sings and plays without breaking rythem is doing great in my book and you did it great. Besides dont worry about the singing, its Cris Cornell. Some breath and diaphragmatic practice and control will help. Get those deep breaths in anywhere you can. Like DeltaTyne mentioned changing key could benefit an slightly out of range song. This is something I need to work on as well. Richard had a fantastic club session with some of this covered. I would check that out perhaps.
Honestly Cris Cornell was one of the greatest front men in the last 35 years IMHO. His suicide is still raw with me.
Great job illiciting strong emotions and I really believe thats what its all about.
Thank you for the upload.
Hey, so I went looking and I dont know if you have ever seen any of Ryan Lendts videos. He does a ton of 90s and early 2K alt rock stuff. He too is a gigantic fan of Cornells. He does have about 4 videos talking specifically about ‘Like A Stone’ and how to play it in different ways depending on your journey both on guitar and vocals, this one may help you. He specifically talks about how it is a difficult song for anyone to sing in the written key. Hope it helps of gives insight in what can be done.
I have not looked at any of his Cornells music in a while, my wife has troubles with them. I tried ‘Seasons’ a little while back but the tuning is very different.
Good Luck post up progress
Thanks that’s a great help. Ok the chords are more awkward with his version but it enables me to bring the high note down to an Eb4 which is a lot easier. Without changing it the lowest I can get it by tuning down is an F4.
Thanks for all the feedback, testament to Justin’s course I think that there’s such an active and helpful community
Very cool, I am glad you tried it. It gives you a few choices.
Thanks for explicitily asking for feedback; I’ll gladly provide!
Guitar playing;
- solid, steady, even… you’ve got a good rhythmic feeling
- Your index finger is going a bit far over the fretboard when doing this barre
Singing
You show potential to sing high notes with an interesting timbre; you do need to find more control and work on your technique to get the pitch right. Your timing is good, just like your guitar. Your main point of attention is vocal support and building up a base line from a lower key first.
you’re flattening more as the notes go higher. Try transposing the song down to build up stability and later, when being able to nail the notes, gradually move up again.
If you don’t know how to do that, check this Live Club (log in to check the notes that go with it)
If you were my student, I would frown upon your posture sitting down, one foot on the air…
Try standing up, both feet flat on the ground just a bit more apart than regularly standing straight. This will guarantee raise your singing stability as you will have a lot more vocal support
If you’d like some more inspiration there, check this Live Club
Great! Thanks for the feedback. Really happy to hear the rhythm was smooth because I was reading the chords off the tv I haven’t memorised it properly yet so I must be on the right track with the songs I’m playing from memory.
I will have a look at the barre chords and as for posture yes I guess you’re right, I tend to practice electric guitar standing up a lot but not acoustic. Certainly isn’t helping the singing. I will watch through that video later !

As always excellent advice to Alex @Alrey87.
As the club #10 singing with and without a guitar was before the video was realessed I wonder if it would be worthwhile doing it again.
Michael
Yes, That will be valuable, I’ll put it on my to-do list. Perhaps even first Live Club for 2025!
I didn’t know about the clubs back then. I would love to sit in on this lesson as well and any other early ones. I have been reading some of the earlier great stuff.
Thanks Lieven.
