Lisa's Learning Log

First of all, thank you to all you wonderful people stopping by, reading, leaving a like or a comment. All is highly appreciated! :orange_heart:

Hi Chris @chris_m

thanks so much for your valuable input!

That’s a great way to keep me engaged and kind of obligated. Once a week might be tough, but that’s what I should aim for. For that matter, phone recordings should be enough.

That’s great. Hope you won’t sink into the recording gear rabbit hole, though. What have you got, if I may ask?

For now, all videos I did were with my phone, but my current one does not have sufficient audio quality for singing. It sounds dull and muffled. So I ordered a USB/XLR condenser mic and hope to find a simple recording tool for video and audio with my laptop utilizing the USB option of the mic. Fiddling with my audio interface and afterwards, putting video and audio together in another tool, is too time consuming for the time being.

Hi Boris @Boris1565

Thanks so much for your valuable input and the kind words about my playing!

Good idea! I’ve neglected this chapter quite a bit on my journey. One advantage: I can utilize my electric guitar with my recently re-discovered headphone amp and won’t mess up with neighbours and the little one’s sleep.

Hhm, I think in the future there will be the need for another electric guitar (very far future though ).

Hi Rogier @roger_holland

Thanks so much for your super kind words. I’m honestly out of words for this kindness and so I just stick with ā€œthank youā€ for now.

You are absolutely right with this one and it goes hand in hand with the other suggestions, too. Now I need a plan and a list. Because what normally happens: I want to do all at once, but this leads to failure. I need to decide first and then focus on one or max. 2 songs at a time.

Hi John @jjw

Thanks so much for your kind words and valuable input. Your approach to 15 mins of practice is definitely a great one and can be adapted to my needs as well.

Phew, that’s quite a lot of repetition. But I get the figure, you are absolutely right.

Also, it’s really important not to ā€œforgetā€ the things we already have under our fingers. 1 or 2 sessions of repertoire revision per week should definitely be part of my plan.

Hi Andrea @Helen0609

Thanks so much for your kind words!

To be fair: I already had this one under my fingers 3 years ago, so it was not learning from scratch. That would not have been possible in this short time.

Hi Cyril @Cyril_fr

thanks for stopping by and leaving a little task for me!

I put it on the list. It’s an all time classic here and it should have been on my list earlier. Whenever I will learn and record it, I promise to tag you!

Hi Michael @mfeeney0110

thanks for the excellent lesson on English language and North American food. I’d try one of these torpedos, but delivery might take a little long…

Me neither, but thanks for sharing a good laugh!

That’s also an excellent idea! The good point here is: I can do the ā€œtheoretical partā€ anytime without a guitar thinking about the shapes and where to find them. Then, I can spend some 5 min of practical usage in some of my practice sessions. It’s also helpful for creativity and songwriting. Moving away from the shapes I’ve used 1000 x and more to something fresh for the ear!

Focusrite scarlett 2i2 studio pack, it comes with a condenser mic, headphones and software. I’m sure it’s overkill for what I’m going to do with it. I know nothing about any of it but there is a production module which I intend to work through to start with Production Basics with Adam G | JustinGuitar.com

That sounds like a good starting point for recording, Chris. Loads of folks here use the Focusrite 2i2, so you’re in good company and I bet, in case of any questions, will find some help in no time. Along with Justin’s videos you’ll get going in no time and a lot of the things are kind of ā€œlearning by doingā€. I’m looking forward to hear some of your contributions in the future!

Lisa, this sounds perfect!
A few days ago, I already listened to your whole-song-version with the singing which was awesome.

For your homework ideas, I think the others made already really nice suggestions.
Like - with so few time on your hands, picking something you really enjoy, a song, a new style…
And, also I really like Boris’ idea for special moments. I remember using my headphone amplifier and having fun being loud and sounding heavy while being quiet for the others!
Maybe yours also has bluetooth connection (or other inputs like a 3,5mm jack) so you could play along a song or a backing track…

Very nice Lisa.
Clean and in the groove.

Cheers, Shane

That was very nice indeed

Im glad to see you back with a guitar in hand ^^

Any teacher would tell you that its better yo play at least 5 to 15 minutes every day than doing nothing at all
so keep on practicing even for 5 minutes !

there are so many exercices to do … are you looking for fingerstyle exercices ?
you know I practice a lot but never more than 15 minutes on each songs or exercice so , with a minimum of practice every day you can work on songs too
just find one that you like

Hi Dominique @domi7

Thanks for your super kind words!

I would not go as far as that, but I had a feeling I got it quite right again and was ok with sharing. I need to go and see your and other’s performances, still. Last time I looked, yours was not there yet.

Unfortunately not. It is a quite simple one, but will serve me well in the next time.

Hi Shane @sclay

Thanks for your kind comment.

That was the most tricky bit for me, especially the bars alternating between Em and A7, where I often dropped a beat or half a beat.

Hi Deborah @GrumpyMac

Thanks for your kind and encouraging words.

Me too.

100 % agree, so I will try and continue like this. Along with Chris’ idea of posting once a week, I hope this will keep me motivated enough again.

Currently, I’m figuring out how to fill my 10 mins. Means, I’m making a list of things/songs I want to work on, but will mainly focus on songs as it combines practice and fun. A tad bit of fingerstyle, too. First, I will try to dust off the songs I already knew. That will help to keep the motivation up. I do this along with one completely new song. That will be 5 mins each.

Lisa I can just echo what other people already wrote, especially what Rogier wrote

Your take was just what I thought it should be/I’d have liked to hear!

I have no good suggestion for what to practice given the limited amount of time, but, there’s a but…for me it works really well when I have little time in the day to be really aware before grabbing the guitar of what my goal is for those 10 or 15 minutes; it can be just playing along just for the fun of it, work with the metronome and gradually increase speed, refine a couple of chord changes for that song I will nail soon or later, listening to a song and taking notes on the musicsheet how many beats/ bar, here’s a rest, here I need to add some dynamics in the strumming etc. It seems like different things with no link or meaning but you’ll find inspiration along the way about what you want to develop or dive deeper in.

That was awesome Lisa! So well played
I also listened to your other post with the whole song, both are so well put together , smooth and sound great!

I know what you mean, this challenge was really motivating

I agree! This is me too

Hi Silvia @Silvia80

thank you so much for your kind words. Still no words for this kindness.
I’m still catching up with the other performances of WYWH, but yours I heard the other day and loved it! For such a short amount of time, you really brought the essence of it to life! A few days more, and you would have nailed level 2 as well.

This is a true point and great input, Silvia. Thank you! Often, I pick up the guitar and then just noodle without being aware of what I’m doing and no feeling of accomplishment afterwards. Being mindful instead can be a true game changer here.

Hi Jasmine @AvalonJ

Thank you for your kind words, really appreciated!
As mentioned above, I am still checking the other performances. Did you send in one as well? Just to know what to watch out for, there are soooooo many now.

So relieving to know we’re not alone!

It sure is!

I was a bit late to the party posting my video. I recorded it on December 11 but didn’t upload it until a few days later. I think it’s still pending. It was too late for the competition but I still wanted to do it . It’s the first time I’ve shared any playing at all so I had to give myself an extra push

There are a lot of performances posted! I watched yours too Silvia @Silvia80 You did a great job! And you look and sound so relaxed!

Hi Andreas @andyPlays

thank you for your kind words.

Yeah, my 12-string finally got some love again - we were both happy. :joy: By the way, it was nice seeing you perform on an OM again! Hopefully, the break until the next one won’t be as long. I thoroughly enjoyed your performance.

Wooohoooo Jasmine, that’s great! Congratulations on your first share - you can be so proud. The first time is always the hardest. From here on, it will get easier. I will check out the performances again and hope, yours will be available soon.

Hi Lisa,
Definitely I plan become a more regular guest on OM - it went better in terms of my nerves than first time - and I fumbled just a little bit :joy:. Looking forward to see - maybe we should do something together look a coop or something one day - would be fun I think!

Yeah, of course we can try to coop on something. That’s what making music is all about in the end.

Just saw it and my comment is ā€˜under review’ but you won’t get a notification, but I wanted to let you know how much I liked it and therefore I’ve been searching for this post for a while…finally found it

So to be clear Jasmine :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:… :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:… :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Greetings :sunflower:

Thank you :sunflower:

p.s. I found your entry post and watched it too, it is amazing!

Jasmine, I just watched your submission… You played it so well!

Where have you hidden that long? This was really great. Got the groove, accurate picking. Never would have guessed this is your first submission. You can be so proud and also stop shying away. Keep them coming! :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:
