Lisa's Learning Log

Nice update Lisa.
Justin has a great nursery rhymes guitar book. I bought that and played for my son when he was very young - he loved it. :slightly_smiling_face: You could try that, you will play guitar and spend great time with your son. He could add a few licks, of course!

Thank you, Boris!

I already bought Justin’s 101 children songs, it’s lovely. I am really looking forward to be playing more for and with him, when he grows older. The only thing I would need to adjust are the lyrics, as we are not native English speakers and all these words won’t make any sense to Vincent (yet). :joy:

Good hear that you found some more time for guitar again :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m sure that Vincent will become a great guitar player one day, if he already now discovered the joy of licks :guitar:

I’m glad to read your news!
Sounds like things are going well over there!

Me too, using Cubase here. AI Version with my audio interface, later elements, recently upgraded to artist… there are 40 or sometimes 50% rebate once or twice a year. But the Elements version has got a lot already, I think. And there are quite a lot of nice tutorials out there, but in case of questions, don’t hesistate to ask me. (oh, well an expert, I’m not yet)

Wishing you lots of music family fun!
Oh, if you don’t have one, you could buy a uke one day, one that you would not cry about in case it was broken, so your son could have a stringed instrument too?

@JokuMuu

Thanks for stopping by, Nicole. I’m also happy to have some more guitar time.

When it’s about licking, he is a pro already. Seriously, we are longing for the time this stops. :woman_facepalming:

@roger_holland

Thanks for checking in here, Rogier, and make my guilty feeling even worse.
Always happy to see you hang around here. :sunflower:

@domi7

Thanks for checking in, Dominique. I’m also quite happy about the situation as it is currently.

Good to know I’m not the only one using Cubase. In the long run, I probably will also go for the Artist version, maybe upgrading from 12 to 13 first. Luckily, the course was designed around Cubase, so the basics are all there now. But probably there will be times when a discussion about Cubase might happen between the two of us.

Yes, we want to get an uke soon. We just didn’t manage to visit a music shop, yet. But I have cravings and GAS to satisfy, too. So I hope, we will change this soon, so I can get ourselves some nice little (and bigger :innocent:) toys to have some fun with.

Oh, it’s 14 now. If you got yours recently, you possibly got the update for free?
Ukes are great! Take care to get one with a useable intonation or be ready to fix it yourself

Ooops. They are fast. I got mine sometime early last year, so probably I have to pay anyhow.

What a joyful update Lisa! I’m glad you can find sometime for your own person and could complete the Digital Music Production Course.

:heart_eyes::heart_eyes: Oh…this is going to be magical…I hope you’ll tell us something about it!

In due time he’ll attend kindergarten and hopefully he’ll have a cool teacher, like me , who knows how to make young children play with a foreign language and learn some of it in a very natural way while having fun.
I have adjusted the english lyrics of many tunes to make them accessible to 3yo…Give me sometime to see how I can share my materials with you…though I guess singing in your mothertongue may feel the best option for a mum while learning a foreign language might be more interesting for a young child when having mates to share the experience with playfully…but really, anything you put passion in he will connect to, no matter if it’s in German or English

Have you considered to play the Uke with him? Maybe you’re already doing it. It’s really easy, to grab and play, the chords in the key of C are super easy and he can have his way with it too! And the sound of it is so joyful!

I hope your guitar practice is going well, even if time is limited, it’s the quality of it that matters, and it’ll be really valuable if you can enjoy it a little bit at the time.

I need to avoid being noisy in the house too…so…

Ciao Silvia!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving some kind words.

Of course I will. I’m really excited about this already!

I wish he will have a teacher like you!! I mean, even better would be you, but that would be an awful long drive to work - or to kindergarten.

That sounds great, thank you so much!

I don’t mind singing in English, I already do it for him. But of course I also want to sing somethin German to help him learn his mothertongue. So maybe I’ll try to mix it and explain it. And 100 % agree: as long as we sing with passion, it doesn’t matter which language it is, music makes the magic anyhow. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I want to do so, but don’t have an Uke yet. It’s on my shopping list for the next visit to a instrument store. Hope we’ll manage that soon, I really have GAS hitting hard these days. :joy:

I’ve read it in your log. All the best for your husband! :four_leaf_clover:

Hi Beenie!!!
I’m so happy to hear that all is going well for you & your family!!!
I was thinking of you the other day… saw the early pics with guitar thread & the pic of you mid-air with your guitar which always makes me laugh! By coincidence, the same day I was watching a movie set during WWII & one of the german officers was listening to music in German, the song was a woman singing in your native language & it was so beautiful… I love to hear music in languages other than English! Anyway, when I heard that it made me think of you & wonder how you were doing with the guitar/baby balancing! Good to hear that you’ve found ways to incorporate music into Vincent’s world & keep learning at the same time! Good for you, Mama!
Have fun!

Hi Tod!

Thanks a lot for checking in and leaving such a kind comment.

Glad I could spread some laughter, that’s why I shared that pic. :joy:

Same for me (and German). Sometimes it feels even more magic to listen to music without understanding the lyrics, but get the feeling of the song anyhow just through the power of the music itself. Amazing!

Have a great day, Tod!

Cheers - Lisa

… I am not very good at this log thing, am I?

Anyways, my so well developed plan with fingerstyle was kind of torpedoed (is this even a word?) by real life. Especially getting back to work threw me off completely again, so for months it was the irregular few mins here and there or just noodling on the ukulele. No progress has been made and the motivation to pick the guitar up to practice anything substantial was a little low as well.

The biggest deal here probably is the feeling of ā€œI can’t do anything meaningful within 5 - 10 mins, so I just don’t do it at allā€. But that’s not true as I just realized during the past few days and I can’t be more thankful for the WYWH challenge! It got my bum finally to sit down and play again during the past days. Mostly, it was no more than 10 to 15 min, but it worked. So thank you for this challenge, Justin!

And while we’re talking about it, here’s the outcome of it (without singing, I’m still recovering from a Sinusitis and sound like Kermit while singing ):

Now, the biggest challenge for me will be to keep the momentum going and take these 10 to 15 mins everyday and fill it with a little fun and something meaningful. Not sure how to do this, though. For now, I take the little win and see, where it takes me. Otherwise, if some of you feel to drop a little homework ideas for me, I am happy to take it.

Post a video once a week. Doesn’t have to be anything in particular. Another famous riff, a practice exercise, or maybe a full song once a month.

I’ve just ordered some recording gear so I can do something along those lines. At the moment my laptop mic doesn’t pick up the sound of guitar.

That was very good Lisa. I would never have guessed that you had little practice recently based on that performance - you look quite comfortable. Well done.

You can learn some simple power chord song. I usually play those, standing up, when I lack motivation and time. I always enjoyed playing those and those loud 15 mins work like stress relief sessions. If you have an electric guitar, I would definitely recommend it. If you don’t have an electric guitar, this is a great reason to buy one!

Lisa o wow …that sounds amazing :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
If it had been a competition you would have won (not heard everyone but a lot)…no joke from me or wanting to be extra nice…this was really great on many levels…well this one was already good a while ago and even better now… but it still makes the following extra easy to say,

Choose a song that you want to learn…nothing more, nothing less, with so little time it is best to just learn a nice song…just enough per day to get a lot better every day, barr by barr…

I am so glad you start strumming again ,and thinking of your nice voice I heard on this from you earlier I can`t wait … but will

Greetings

Yes, indeed, it’s the perfect word in this instance. Nicely done.

As was your performance of Wish You Were Here, sounded great.

Regarding 15 minutes a day: when I have 10-15 minutes, I usually do one of 2 things:

  1. Work on my current new song. I’m generally working on a new fingerstyle song and I will pick it up and focus on the last couple of bars that I have learned. You can make a lot of progress on 2 bars of music in 15 minutes. (Playing at 60 bpm, you can play 2 bars 112 times in that amount of time  )
  2. Play through my repertoire: I’ve got about 10-12 fingerstyle songs that I have learned and I have to play through them fairly regularly or else I start to ā€œloseā€ them.

Actually, this second one can be done with virtually any amount of available time. I can play a tune through several times in 2-3 minutes. That’s useful and is also kinda relaxing, so win-win.

Hey Lisa, great job   ! If this is the outcome of 10 to 15 minutes daily, I raise my hat! Fantastic!

Hello Lisa,

One of the few songs I know and like in german is " 99 Luftballons" by Nena. Maybe you could play (and sing) it?

Hi Lisa. Just to confuse your English a bit more, a torpedo is also the name used in New York and New Jersey, USA for of a big, fatty sandwich on a roll. If you eat the whole thing, you will feel torpedoed.

What that has to do with guitar practice, I don’t know.

One thing I’ve been doing instead of practicing songs over and over is play around more with TRIADS. In my early days, I wrote down several four bar lines of chord progressions that sounded good to my ears to practice chord changes. Lately, I have been revisiting those simple progressions and trying to play them in triads on different string sets and up and down the neck. It’s a good way to get triad shapes ā€œunder your fingersā€ and see how chord voicings change and add richness.
