My first time playing and singing through he whole thing. Work to be done, for sure.
Scott @scottasaigon
Well done I thought you did fine for your first time singing, it is not easy.
Michael
Nice one, Scott! Sounded great, especially for first time through!
You have a very nice voice for it and well played too ![]()

Hi Scott, going through the whole song for the first time is a big achievement and I hope you’re very happy with yourself for it!
More confidence will come with time and practice but you’re already doing very well, especially with the strumming, the steady Rhythm and the clean chord changes.
Aahhh… Dude with the cool steampunk

First of all, kudos for taking the leap and ‘exposing yourself’ in public ![]()
Bravo
Congratulations
and well done!
There, that wasn’t too hard, was it? ![]()
Not only do you earn positive vibes for your efforts, and learn something by simply doing it, but hopefully others will chip in and give you further food for thought as to how to improve even more.
Here are my 2 cents:
As Michael points out, singing whilst playing can be tricky, and something sounded ‘off’ to me ![]()
I believe you are making a rookie mistake, which I have made many times, and I’m surprised folk don’t mention more often here.
Starting to sing on the wrong note ![]()
You are playing the song in E minor. The Tears for Fears original is, I believe, in F# minor (same chords, but with capo on 2nd fret). The Gary Jules version is (in between) in F minor, capo on 1st fret.
If we just work with the E minor key you’re playing in:
I believe you start singing the note B, whereas the original starts on the root note E.
In the chorus I find it kind of funny, the ‘funny’ should besung on C# (I think you’re singing an A).
Essentially, I believe you’re kind of singing harmonies, which makes it sound odd to these ears.
I would suggest putting a capo on the first fret and singing along to the Gary Jules version, as it’s simpler and slower, and just focus on singing the same notes that you hear.
Hopefully this makes some sense (and is not all codswallop!)
In any case, well done again.
Give yourself a pat on the back ![]()
Well done Scott, you have a good voice and hold a melody, time to go open mic, and keep going
Nicely played and sung Scott and well done for getting out there. The first post is a big step but it only gets easier from here. Onwards and upwards!
Good job Scott. Its tough posting videos. I have a real issue with it. I dont know why it can be so hard. I dont mind performing in front of people but the minute i am making a video in my music studio on my own I get wierd.
You overcame the first step and it was great. Good job and keep up the good work. Each time will be easier.

For a first attempt that’s pretty decent, no nits to pick really, keep going you’ve broken the ice now - upwards and onwards!
Bravo on that first full play through and share, Scott.
Sounded good to me. Well done on the intro, some good instrumental dynamics, like your singing voice.
I’ve edited your original post to change the link to a standard YouTube link rather than the youtu.be form.
Well done on posting your first AVoYP Scott….a real milestone. ![]()
Confident strumming too.
Of course this is a guitar learning site but I agree with @brianlarsen regarding your vocal.
Nicely done Scott! Congratulations on your first AVOYP! It’s a big milestone in the journey ![]()

Good job Scott!
Congrats on your AVOYP!!!

Well done @scottasaigon! Nice tune and you played it well. I’ll give you the same advice that i receive - be more confident in the vocals.
Well done Scott. Guitar sounds very nice. Vocal needs work but that is not a problem as singing and playing together was a first for you. It’ll get better and your voice does sound nice.
Thanks Michael - I appreciate the support ![]()
Cheers - appreciated!
Thanks - yes the confidence is the issue. Like I’m trying not to be heard. Working on that ![]()
Open mic would be terrifying, but thanks for the vote of confidence.
Mmm, I tried the capo on the first fret and it did not sound great. I went back to Justin’s lesson and it’s no capo. So it’s me and my voice. I’m trying some voice lessons on another music app and beginning to grasp just how much work there is to be done. I’ll post a new version around spring time next year in the hopes that there is significant progress to show!
