Major Pentatonic Study Lick 2

I’ve been working on this lick and I notice that Justin does seem to do a sort of “seagull” on the top bend (eg at 1:20). The bend goes up a tone, but then comes down again to the original note.

I realise there are no hard-and-fast rules in blues, so I guess it is OK to bend up and then back down again in some licks?

Hey Alan,

Bending " up, then back down" is as common as just bending up.
Check out some Blue tabs, and you’ll see them everywhere.

All the best. Rock those blues mate :+1:

Ah, thanks Shane. It’s just that in the first module he was very particular about bending up to the note, them muting at the top. I guess there are many different techniques and the aim is to have enough control to do whatever you think sounds good. (…some day!)

Hey Alan,

Yes, Justin’s teaching the first steps here, and two crucial elements - bending to pitch, and muting. Stick close to his instruction re the mechanics etc. It’ll hold you in good stead. As you get into it more and get the basics going, it’ll all become much more a ‘feel’ thing.

All the best, and happy bending!

Cheers, Shane
