When I write songs, it usually takes me many months (if not years). I often have to leave things and then come back to them later, and I usually wind up recording several iterations as the thing evolves into whatever its going to be.
This one was totally different, it just sort of came out of me one afternoon without thinking too much about it. I recorded a rough draft that evening so I wouldn’t forget it, and then made this recording the following day.
I’d love it if this could happen to me more often, but its been a few weeks now, and it looks like I’m back to my plodding iterative process

I really like this and your other songs - in some video (it may have been in Blim) I saw you had all the instruments + drums! Yay!
I experienced these things too, but on a few levels lower! (songs taking long to finish and the sudden “flow” where it feels natural and easy. But not much finished in terms of songwriting yet here, haha
Still working my way to guitar and musicianship, so I hope that it will still improve over time

Yeah, I actually started out as a drummer, but these days I’ve totally neglected practicing. I pretty much only play when I’m recording something. In a perfect world, it would be nice to get my chops back where they once were, but I’ve focused most my energy on improving with the guitar.
I’d love to hear one of your songs when you get something close to being finished. I think this is a pretty safe space to share stuff, even if its not 100% where you want it to be.

Excellent, David. Well written song. I’m wondering if you did all of the instruments or used a program to add those. The subject could be about a fight for or over anything, whether a physical altercation or a personal struggle. Well chosen title. Only thing I wonder is, if you changed the key up one, could you sing in that key ok? At the ends of verses you were definitely hitting the notes, but were they at the limits of your vocal range? All in all I loved it!

That’s an excellent comment about maybe changing the key. I was definitely pushing my vocal range, but it didn’t even occur to me to put a capo on and make things easier for myself. I need to keep that option in mind more often.
I did play all the instruments. The drums are an electric kit recorded to midi in logic pro, so there is definitely some software assistance, but I personally still count that as “playing”
Hey Dominique - thanks for the clarification. I couldn’t find these yesterday, but today I’ve listened to the St Louis Blues, Moving On, and Gonna Lose. I thought they all sounded really good - there’s a lot of promise there.
The songs are all interesting melodically and lyrically, you’ve really nailed recording multiple instruments in sync with the tempo, and also pretty solid production as far as being able to hear all the parts clearly in the mix.
One of the driving forces behind democracy is that we settle things at the ballot box. That doesn’t always play out in reality. Living here in California, I can totally dig the cut of your jib.
