Matchstalk Men & Matchstalk Cats & Dogs - Brian & Michael

Where to start  I sort of wanted to achieve so much more when I set out to put this together but the time comes when you realise that you will never be happy with the final result regardless, so it becomes time to role with it :grimacing:

Firstly, I was reminded of this song when I heard it recently in a Karaoke, and remembered what a fun song it seemed at the time, and quirky, so decided that I would do it and incorporate a few new items in the final result.

This then, is my first using the Trio +. I have it since Jan and quickly found it fun and quite easy to use and was desperate to get something put together to see how all sounded and also how I went playing along with something other than mostly myself.

This is also the first video I have had to edit in Resolve, so there was a lot of googling going on to discover the techniques needed.

And finally, the first recording I have done where I had my Trio track, lead vocal track, backing vocal track and guitar track all through Reaper, which proved trying at times in the way it is initially put together, but I got there, well, somewhere

Anyway, I’m as happy as I’m going to be with it for now and I had to remind myself that this is only part of a journey, and so I am certainly happy with the progress I can see here and as the skills sharpen things will get better.

Righto, after that long winded drivel, I hope you enjoy it and feel free to be honest with your comments, I’m not that precious .

Hello Craig. I’m just emerging from a nasty flue/cold that has laid me low for 4 days and your performance has cheered me up no end. I loved this song when it was a one hit wonder here in the UK. You’ve done a splendid job and created a very enjoyable song. One small issue for me was an
fx that seemed to happen on the first beat of some bars near the beginning of the song. I found it distracting.

Craig

Well performed: really steady rhythm guitar and a confident vocal. You did well to manage so many different aspects of production and should be very pleased with the finished article. Very enjoyable.

Brian

Hi John,
Thanks for listening and glad you enjoyed it. I find it a very quirky fun song. It was an interesting story too which I am sure you are aware of.
I’m intrigued by the sound (fx) you mention, I was listening again (and again) and couldn’t pick what your obviously better trained ear is picking up unless it’s what is on the drum track? When I set up the Trio, obviously there are only so many options available and I wanted something simple so as not to overpower the whole song. But at the end of each section of Trio when it moves to the next section it throws a quick drum beat in there (no idea what drums it replicates, I’m not a drummer ) I wasn’t overly keen on it but ran with it as it did break up the sections.

Nice one, Craig! Sounds beautiful and there’s a lot going on here - mixing a lot of tracks and video editing. That’s a technical level I aspire. Thank you for sharing!

I enjoyed this tremendously. Such a pleasant listen. I think you did great in your mixing. Loved the harmonies. You also did exceptional on your video production. I’m not familiar with the song or the band. I researched a bit and learned it was a tribute to an artist named L. S. Lowry.

Hi Pam,
Thanks for stopping by for a listen. Yes, written a year after he died by a guy that lived in his area. It was pretty much a one hit wonder reaching number 1 in England in 1978. They did have an album that year but as far as I know this was the only hit.

Thanks again for the listen.

 yes, it was and when I heard it recently it was probably the first time in about 45 years :scream:.

Thanks for stopping by.

Yes indeed…a blast from the past.
Well done Craig.

Great video including 2 different view points. Nice touch.

Man, it seems your controlling a whole bunch of tools to get your production to us. You should be very proud of what you’ve done with this.
I don’t know the song. But I sure liked the way you played it.

A very fun to listen to song you’ve done all by your self.

Last comment is.
I’m impressed!
Excellent!

Thanks for the work you’ve done to get to the point of sharing.

What a cracker, Craig!
You’re a superb advert for the Trio+, getting the balance spot on with your steady strumming, vox and backing track.
Even though I’m familiar with the song, I was still expecting Francis Rossi to be singing about Matchstick Men, a song he wrote on the bog nearly 10 years earlier about Lowry! (Quo’s first single).
I used to love taking the kids down the the Lowry gallery in Salford when we lived in Manchester.
Cheers for the double trip down memory lane, as well as sharing your progress! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the listen, I’m sure you’re too kind with your comments but appreciate it mate, thanks :+1:

Wow, well, thanks for listening Brian appreciate it mate. I looked at that and thought, firstly perhaps I should break out the electric and give that a whirl, and secondly, jeez you’re an old bugger
Anyway mate, thanks for listening, I wasn’t overly happy but it is what it is as we say in the antipodes.

@sairfingers Thanks Gordon for stopping by mate, appreciated :+1:

Nice playing & love the backup vocals alongside your main vocals!
