After 3 years of playing mostly by myself, I’ve finally taken the plunge and started recording myself! I recently did my first ever live performance of “The Royal We” by Silversun Pickups, and despite being super nervous, I went ahead and posted it on YouTube. It was honestly terrifying but also incredibly motivating!
I’ve also just recorded a Metallica cover (Crown of Barbed Wire), and the difference between playing alone and knowing you’re being recorded is huge - took a couple of takes before getting one I was happy with!
My goal for this year is to keep pushing myself out of my comfort zone by recording and sharing more covers.
Very good. Your understanding of the piece is reflected in confident, dynamic and musical performance. Your performance of ‘The Royal We’ is good: your timing is occassionally a little off, almost as if you’re slightly ahead of the backing track. Look forward to what comes next.
Thank you for your positive comments Brian, I really appreciate it! With the live performance, I could barely hear myself on stage, that combined with the nervousness definitely didn’t help.
What an entry to make! I thought that was really, really cool! Good tone, nice tight playing. Good technique, good timing. Very solid indeed!
One small thing that I thought about was that, for this style of music, your right hand is perhaps even a tiny bit too relaxed? Perhaps a bit more aggression in your rhythm playing would sound great. However, generally speaking it’s good to play relaxed, so take this advice with a grain of salt Perhaps try recording one of the sections a few times with different levels of aggression and see what sounds best and most tight/accurate to you.
Ralph, congratulations on making the plunge of recording yourself. Nothing pushes like knowing that you will be playing where others can hear. It always make my hands sweat a little . I don’t have a lot of experience playing metal, but it sounded like you were playing confidently throughout the song and playing on rhythm with the baking track. Well done.
