Metallica - The Unforgiven cover

Hi guys,

It’s been a little while since I had the time to work on a cover due to business at work as well as some medical challenges on the home front. But I just wrapped up this classic Metallica track.
Lots and lots of parts in this one, including some nylon string guitars. I only rarely record acoustic, simply because it’s so much easier with the electric - but I want to get more into it.

This time I also recorded the bass part. Also something I’ve been meaning to do a lot more of.

Hope you like it!

And, as I usually do, for those interested in digging deeper into tones, mixing and parts - here is a render of just the guitars (and bass) that I recorded for this track:

I listened last week Unforgiven and Fade to black and thought how amazing they are in terms of different layers and how cool would it be to make such project. And now I see this. It is brilliant Kasper, pro level! Hard to fault anything, but I do miss vocals. Why not including it?

Do you find metal good for rhythm and speed development?

I like it Kasper, this is something I would like to get into cheers Hec

Thanks for checking out my track!

@Boris1565 I think it’s good to pick a song that you enjoy that is slightly beyond your current ability. Having a concrete goal (in the form of a song) has always been the best way for me personally to improve. More than running exercises. But yes, I think metal and hard-rock is good for that. It tends to be double tracked, which requires a lot of precision to pull off, and there are certain things in metal rhythm that is very good for practicing rhythmic concepts and speed.

Hi Kasper, this is such a great song and your rendition is superb, almost faultless to my ear…because of the missing vocals…so I had to sing it myself but couldn’t remember the lyrics well enough!

Thank you very much!

Awesome work! You definitely nailed all the parts, and the tones, everything. Very well done.

Hi Kasper,
Nothing short of amazing and very well done. Of course that is an understatement! Play, as always is top notch. The tones are Pete Thorn like, just excellent.

The nylon strings add a great touch and it will be nice to hear more of them in the future!

All the best and may all on the home front be well!

@Silvia80 Thanks! Well, sometimes I do include some vocals from the site that I use for drums etc - but this time the foreign accent was a bit too heavy  Hope you could at least hum along!

@coolAlias & @Bytron08 Thanks for listening and for the kind words!

@LBro Thanks! Yeah, I actually enjoy the sound of acoustic instruments, and nylon strung guitars in particular. But they are so difficult to use in a home recording. First of all, the condenser mic picks up absolutely everything - including any background noise from the family in the house. Secondly, the tone is incredibly sensitive to mic vs guitar placement, so any time I wanted to experiment with some details - maybe changing the picking patterns, the notes etc - I had to struggle a bit to re-create the tone of the other parts I already had recorded. But I guess it’s just a matter of doing it more to become better.
