Metramaks' Learning Log

Hi everyone! Finally, I’ve decided to start my learning log, so here we are.
To open this topic, I’ll write a few words about myself as I haven’t written any introductory posts before.
My name is Artem, I’m from Ukraine and I play guitar.
Ok, a few more. I got into music when I was 15 and soon realized I wanted to learn to play guitar. It’s simply impossible to listen to AC/DC or Deep Purple and not want to be able to play those riffs and solos yourself. But guitar is hard, especially when you try to learn it on your own, so it took me over 2 years to actually start. Fortunately, I made those first steps and since then guitar has always been present in my life. I started on a classical guitar that we had at home, several months later bought first my own guitar, Cort dreadnought and then my electric guitar, Epiphone SG. Wanted a Les Paul, but never regretted getting SG instead. And I love music. No, I LOVE music. Mainly I listen to rock, blues and metal, but good music is good music and I enjoy many other genres too.
And that’s pretty much it, been playing for over 4 years already and can confidently say that it’s something I intend to do till the end.

Now a bit about this topic, what I want to do here. I’ve looked at other people’s logs and some did video updates, so that’s how I decided to do it too. At least try and then we’ll see.
I will be writing a bit here and there, but mainly just talking about some things in front of a camera once in a while, when there’s something worth talking about.

And the first entry is about my first real live experience on a local open mic and a couple of words about the new gear I got recently.
And I finally got a good enough photo to change my profile picture, yay!

It’s a bad video that I don’t think is worth watching , but I’ve already recorded it, so here it is. I’d suggest spending that time playing a few songs on guitar instead.

Welcome into LLs world Artem! I’m sure you’ll find it a very useful tool for your learning. I personally like to make periodic update videos: it helps me to set realistic short-term goals; I record myself and share even if I’m not totally happy with my playing to self-assess, get feedback and be happy with the aspects of the playing that have been nailed, write down what needs still work.

I’m like that too

Welcome to the world of Learning Logs, Artem. Most of all congrats on your first open mic and the new gear :slightly_smiling_face:

Did it become clear what your cat (cats?) wanted btw?

I think they want more attention, play with them or something, but c’mon, there are 3 of them and they can’t entertain themselves. Weird animals they are.
Or maybe they want something else entirely, who knows. I need a cat translator.

New year, new learning log video. I haven’t abandoned this topic, just didn’t have enough things to talk about. But now I do and here it is, the video of me talking that nobody’s gonna watch (I won’t, that’s for sure ).
Don’t wanna just repeat the whole video in text here, but there should be at least a short table of content. The first topic is about me attending jam sessions. Such a cool experience, but also shows how much I need to improve to feel confident about playing live with others. I’ll write a separate topic at the end of the month with some videos after another jam.
The second one is about recording an AVOYP I’m planning to do for over a month already. Why is it always so tedious? But now when I’ve talked about it I should finally do it, gonna start tomorrow.
And at the end there’s an unplugged version of Nothing Else Matters. I haven’t listened back to it, but in the moment it felt quite nice. Also here’s a direct link to the start of me playing to skip all the talking. Though I started to talk again after finishing playing.
Nothing Else Matters single acoustic version

And here’s a video itself with a cute preview.

Damn, how is this 27 minutes long? For the next one I should definitely prepare some kind of a script draft to make it shorter.

Your playing was very good. In the picked sections of the song your playing became more confident after a couple of minutes: that worked really well. In the strummed section, 18:36, the timing became less certain and when the section finished you began counting regularly again. There’s similar timing issues with the hammer on / pull off phrases on 1st string. Slowing those parts down and practicing with a metronome might help improve those parts. A good performance.

Thanks for checking out and for the feedback, Brian. Timing is not my strongest point, and I definitely need more practice.

Never stopped, Hec. Haven’t really practiced in the past few months, but I play every day at least for a bit.

I transcribed my first real solo!
Didn’t want to create a new topic for this, but wanted to share and remembered that I have this learning log, so here we are.

I’m still often going to the jams and learning quite a lot of songs, but usually do it using tabs on Songsterr and video lessons. But sometimes there are no tabs or lessons and it’s exactly the case for this cover of Dusty Springfield’s version of Spooky.

And there are tools like Songsterr AI that can create tabs from audio, but after listening to the solo I decided that it’s not too complicated for me to sit and transcribe it myself. I’ve done it once during Unit 1 of BLIM, but this one is the first actual solo from a song I attempted to work on.
So I opened Guitar Pro, added the audio track, aligned the tempo and started with rhythm first. Can be any note, I just randomly chose the 5th fret on the 3rd string and used it everywhere focusing on getting the rhythm right. It’s very simple, so it was done fairly quickly.

And the second step was to find all the right notes. I knew the key, every guitarist’s favourite A minor, so I started with the 1st pattern of the minor pentatonic and went from there.
And here are the results. I have some doubts about a few notes, but it sounds close enough already and even if it’s not 100% accurate to the original, I don’t think it actually matters.

And since I’m at it, here are two recordings that aren’t good enough to be posted as separate AVOYP topics, but are gonna be just fine here.
It’s Mama Said by Metallica, one of my favourite their songs, and I Am The Highway by Audioslave, another incredible tune. I’m playing acoustic guitar here, original records are being played through my PC speakers and all the audio is recorded by my phone. Still turned out not too bad, I think.

I liked both songs but particularly the audioslave cover

You can never go wrong with some Chris Cornell

Why aren’t they good enough for AVOYP? They were excellent, you can’t do them much better imo. It will be interesting first timers’ OM. :slightly_smiling_face:

No one could growl sing like he did. Amazing voice.

It’s the recording quality. Playing-wise wise it was pretty good, though still with a few mistakes here and there. But I just don’t want to post AVOYP like that and now I don’t have gear to properly record an acoustic guitar. But I can and will record more with my electric guitars and those will be separate posts.
And thanks for checking out.

Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, Chris was an amazing musician and has gone away too soon.
