I’m on ‘Module 2 - The E Chord’ and after the ‘Changing Chords’ and ‘Playing Songs’ sections, there is a ‘One String Riffs with Mutes’ section, which appears to have nothing to do with the E Chord or anything else in this section.
Welcome to the forum Ed
As Justin say in the video “as beginners we haven’t used the little finger yet”
So instead of using a boring finger exercise he’s using the Peter Gunn riff as a finger exercise to strengthen the little finger, helps with finger independence and picking hand coordination.
It always more fun playing riffs instead of finger exercises, they come later on in the coarse
The e-string plays an E note, which is the root of the E chord major chord. So its a tonal correlation most likely. It is practicing multiple things, one of which is getting the tone correct in your ear. I dont have the app so I am just taking a shot.
Keep working on it. And good work inquiring about things.
Hi, been using the app since February of this year and just finishing up Grade 1. There are a few places where some basic riffs are taught that don’t necessarily have much to do with the chords or strumming patterns focused in the module. I believe the intent here is just to get an introduction to single note picking as farther on in the grades there are scales to learn. I can say that strumming chords and picking single notes is very different. I’m kinda doing the scale thing on my own a little early. I would embrace those riffs as they will be beneficial down the road.
Take your point @croth70, but it doesn’t make sense to suddenly be given an exercise without any tuition. Has nobody else seen these riffs and what is meant by ‘with mutes’, mute all strings between each note?
It makes total sense to me. Note that in the exercise you’re playing 3 notes on the E string; note that the 3 notes are the same 3 notes that make up the E chord. He’s training your ears and fingers without you even knowing it. Scaffolding is a powerful teaching/learning tool. Carry on
Like I said earlier I don’t use the app so can’t veiw the lesson, but I don’t understand what the problem is with theses riff/exercises is.
If you already did the Peter Gunn riff you should know how to mute the stgrings your not playing. Justin explains it very well in that video.
As for what does it have to do with the E chord? Nothing but it has everything to do with playing guitar and finger dexterity.
If I’m wrong can you explain what you’re having trouble with and I’ll try and help you out.
@stitch I did the Peter Gunn riff on the website, there’s been no mention of it, or any other riff, since I started using the app. If I hadn’t used the website first and just started using the app, I wouldn’t have a clue what it was. That’s my point.
