With chord-shaped hammer-ons, do you strum while you’re playing them? As opposed to single-string hammer-ons, where you don’t pluck the string?

Hi Brian,
I’ll just answer this one, it’s not a ‘hammer on’ when you strike it on the exact time you put your fingers down, so it’s the same as on a single string note.

I don’t quite follow your semantics

It’s hard to tell on the video, but it looks (and sounds) to me as if Lieven is strumming the strings at the same time as ‘hammering’ the chord shape. This would be different to my usual understanding of a ‘hammer-on’ (where you don’t pluck the string)

I would find it very difficult to hammer a whole barre chord shape and have all the strings ring out.

Hi, I took a look and found what you mean in the video, but a hammer on is a technique that means that you do not play those notes at the same time while letting the fingers are down
…here a very small difference in time due to Lieven, but there is a difference … and after some practice it is as easy as one vinger …

you dit see the video from U2 one … hamer on with chord is also in there ( if you wathed the whol video) …

I use it every day with whole chords …just practice it

I se what Richard typed … I think there is some confusion…but I thought it made sense that you make a sound by striking the strings and then letting the fingers come down…and while the fingers are hitting down you don’t strum on that moment …

Yes, strum the strings with your barre in position and hammer your other fingers down in their correct cluster to make the chord.
If all is working well you should hear the two sounds - one from your initial strum and one from the full chord made after hammering.
To begin with the volume of the full chord may be lower as you build hammer-on strength.
This will be less prnounced (and physically much easier) on an electric guitar through an amp.

Ps : Guess what I’m trying … the bottom 2 strings quickly fall silent but it works) and I have tried this before with the entire grip including barre finger for/by someone with the same question… I have no idea who anymore
