My daughter got an acoustic guitar in her twenties (now 39) and never learned to do more than strum a few chords. My son got a guitar when he went to college and didn’t do much better with it. (Now 36 with one and three year old sons, I’m thinking the guitar will stay in the closet for the foreseeable future.)
Since I started learning in summer 2022, I’ve been sharing the journey with them by phone and video. My daughter got inspired to pick up her guitar, engaged an instructor and got back on the horse six months ago, and I’m excited for her. Now she’s texting and calling me for advice (which having been a student for 2.5 years, I am fully qualified to give ). I’ve been pitching her to check out Justin Guitar, and now she has started the beginner courses! So, we’re a multi-generational Justin Guitar family now.
She told me she was having a hard time with the pick slipping in her fingers. Her instructor suggested a thicker pick, which IMHO is not the best answer. I said you ultimately want to grip the pick lightly, as if you are holding a feather, and that will come in time. I pointed her to Justin’s lessons on that topic, then suggested she try various brands, materials and thicknesses and notice the difference in the feel and the tone created by them. Then, I gathered a bunch of picks I had accumulated and mailed them to her. Being an architect and highly-analytical person, she sent me this photo with her critique of each of them. Now I know she’ll become a guitarist!
