Musopia App Grade 2 Module 9 Californication

In Musopia App Grade 2 Module 9 Californication, there’s a video, Californiacation Riff, showing how to play Californication then the Californication practice song. My question/confusion is there are chords in the practice song (F maj7, F#m & Bm) that are never mentioned in the video, nor are they previously introduced in the course material. This is really confusing. I’m trying to exclusively/religiously use the musopia app, but these things confuse me.

Hi John, I can’t speak directly to the app, but I notice you’re on Grade 2. Justin often simplifies songs, using chords appropriate for the level it’s being introduced at. The lesson for the song is Grade 4. It’s often a good idea to check the website content for the modules in the app. There is a lot of supporting text on the website. In this instance, Justin explains how to navigate Californication for Grade 2 Module 9:

6 AWESOME SONGS TO PRACTICE THE F CHORD

Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers

You learned the riff in the last lesson, so it makes sense to check out the rest of the song, right?

You can use the Mini F for this song. But you can swap it for the F Maj7 if you need to!The guitar solo modulates to another key and needs an F#min and a Dmaj7. You might have to skip that bit or come back to it later!

Judi, thanks for the quick reply. Dosen’t make sense why the app would put a Grade 4 song lesson in the Grade 2 section. Am I wrong in trying to use just the Justin Guitar Musopia app?

I used the app for quite a while. For me, the main advantage of the app was the play-along karaoke function. I always watched the lessons on the website. As for introducing an advanced song early: I know it seems odd, but Justin tries to keep beginners engaged and sometimes offers popular songs in a simplified version. Also consider that he introduces the riff in this module…I suppose he thought folks would want to learn the entire song. I stuck with the riff for this module and worked on House of the Rising Sun and One for full songs.

The Californication riff is fun to play; especially after you get the #1 and #2 & #3 fingers to stretch enough to play the 2nd part - took a couple days for me. Also, I can play an F, but find it difficult to transition from G to F, fluidily…still working on that.

Just practice the riff at this point @prairietrees, it’s a good one to learn. Tackling the whole song is fun once you feel ready, too.
