Hi Susan,

Not familiar with the song, but that sounded good to me.
Like some of the others, finger picking isn’t my forte, so can only comment on what i hear - and that sounded clean with smooth changes.

Nice work, Susan. I’m going to try some of these same things from the great advice given from some of the posts above. I’m currently going through Justin’s Fingerstyle lessons. Currently in the lesson on Travis Picking. Maybe they can help you if you haven’t already been through some of them. I did see where you haven’t gone through the Travis Picking lesson. See All Courses/Grade 5/ Folk Fingerstyle if you like. Anyway, good job!

Figuring it all out by yourself, that’s impressive! Well done, and well played, it sounds so nice, I need to check this out myself now. Others have mentioned already that this is travis picking (where the thumb plays the down beats and alternates strings and the other fingers pick strings in between). If you search for that tag you should find some good tutorials out there for context to what you have discovered on your own. You should totally come to the first timers open mike!

Thank you! I did check out Justin’s lesson on travis picking for interest to see when I heard about it - it looks complicated but well explained so will do some practice on that. Good luck with your fingerstyle.

Thank you for liking my post. Good luck with your playing, it’s so fun isn’t it. Still not sure on the open mic, think I need to practice some more.

Thanks for sharing, you’ve got some really nice sounds going on there, and it’s got a proper groove underneath.
It’s great that you’ve learned that John Mayer song , so useful , because the way it harmonises the scale using partial A shapes is something you’ll be able to use that same stuff to make your own arrangements of many songs very easily - maybe at a community open mic like @TheMadman_tobyjenner suggested
All the bits of technique to work on, sure it’s work in progress like all of us, and if you keep heading over to the main site and checking out the relevant lessons, they will help you immensely.
As others have pointed out a hard chair rather than sitting on the couch will give you a quick win.
Cheers

That’s impressive Susan… how long have you been learning the guitar? I am asking as i am a beginner - just finished Grade 1 - and want to assess the progress I should expect.

Hi Susan,
Nice fingers work, beyond what I can do as I simply never hit it off in this style of play. There are some issues as mentioned, but you are likely not that far along in your journey on guitar. Thus, the upside potential of your play is great and that is something to keep your eyes on!

All the best,
LB

Thank you. I’ve been learning about 6 and a half years. I think others progress faster than I have though. I found these lessons give a great foundation and then you can explore different things to suit the kind of music you’re interested in. I recommend doing the theory alongside the practical lessons, it really helped me. Good luck with your learning!
