My first upload to the AVOYP, Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam

So yeah I have been here for a while, a little over a year, everything I know I learned here with justin since oct 2023. I have had some block about videos of myself. Insecurities, a lot of things. I am really trying to get over this. So here Is my first upload for the AVOYP section. I know its not good, but I can work on it. In all honesty I probobly should work on it until it sounds better. But honestly, I can just do that forever and It will be a good excuse to never post.

I knew the words, I learned the chords earlier this year so nothing to it but to do it. I missed a few spots and had a couple of hiccups. I also cant get the harp section fit in right. I am not sure how to do that so I just tossed it in after the play through. It also needs work.

Its my first melody recorded also. Its a lot of firsts. Im trying to get over this hump. Dont know why, I dont mind performing in front of people live, I just dont like seeing me right now I guess its been one of those years.

Enough of all thats sorry crapola. So this song is a Nirvana cover of the original Vaselines song Jesus don’t want me for a sunbeam. Now that I think about it. I should have stood up.

Jesus dont want me for sunbeam

Thank you for watching.

Bravo, Jason, making and sharing the first recording here is always a big step and an accomplishment to be proud of.

Your playing and singing were great. Good steady rhythm and the vocal just worked for me. Funnily enough I watched before I read and was thinking Nirvana-esque. Your voice has a great quality for that style of music and performance.

Enjoyed the melody treat at the end.

Well done, and look forward to hearing more from you.

Congrats Jason on your first AVOYP! It’s big step ahead!
You did a great job with playing and singing at the same time. It was a very enjoyable listen! Your voice fits the genre and you can be confident as a singer.
You had a steady and solid rhythm, your strumming was very consistently. I guess, if you don’t lean back and sit a bit more upright, you could free up your strumming hand and get a more relaxed position for your strumming.
I liked the melody linetowards the end a lot, you’ll see, with time it will get more fluent.
A really solid performance! Keep on with the good work!

Great to break the ice Jason, and you did well mate.

I enjoyed that; and the song itself brought back some wild memories for me, around the early 90s when that was released.

Cheers, Shane

Congratulations for your first AVOYP

you can already play and sing at the same , thats awesome !!!
something to be proud of

your playing was great , but be careful on your sitting position , you lean to far back in your chair
seating upright is better for playing
it must not be too comfortable to play like that

I hope you ll post more AVOYP in the future

Good to know that you have overcome the initial hesitation, for me its still a thing. Will love to hear more from you :grinning:

Well done posting your first AVoYP Jason. Singing and playing too! Good stuff. Steady rhythm and a definite Nirvana vibe.
A suggestion from me is to change your posture. With your guitar at its current angle you’ll find it very difficult when you come to play barre chords as it will require a very awkward wrist angle.
Sit up straight and get the guitar into a more upright position. You’re probably holding it in its current position so you can watch your fingers. That’s another habit to break.
Well done. Looking forward to your next one.

Congratulations on your first upload, Jeson. You did very well. Good strumming and singing, not an easy thing to pull. I agree with Gordon, your posture could improve.

Super job on your first AVYOP, Jason …

Liked the song and your voice was right “on song” too.
I think the critique about your posture is fair and food for thought moving forward. I also have a (too) comfortable office desk chair which eventually did my old frame no favours: I now swap it out for a stool when I play and practise.

Nonetheless you have debuted, … and congratulations are very well deserved … :boom:

Keep having fun … :sunglasses:

Wow I am overwhelmed and happy this morning. My fear was, there would be a bunch of views and no comments. I appreciate everyones feedback. It has made my day and I am so glad I posted. I have never been bothered being on stage or performing for others live, I dont know why this is different. Maybe the permanence of it. Regardless this has been a huge step overcoming that and it will be conquered.

You are all spot on about the chair and posture. These comments have shown me how important this actually is.

Thank you so much, yes I can keep working in it to get better. I would like to get my inflection soft in the right places and then build up to the louder spots, Thanks again, your posts have been very inspirational to me.

I appreciate this Roger. Putting the two together was more difficult than I imagined.

Thank you David. Sometimes the hesitation is because in my head I’m wondering did I just mess up? but then I mess up thinking about that. LOL to much think… just do.

I am thrilled to know people enjoyed it.
Thank you.

This means a lot coming from you. Believe it or not, I have learned a good deal from some of your detailed answers to others in old forum posts from back before I was a member.

Thabk you for being candid. It is not comfortable at all honestly I am actually fighting this chair, it is broken. If I cross my legs I slide out of it. It is actually painful.

Thank you for watching and the positive vibs.

It’s good to see you as well. Its been a hell of a ride since the last time.

Yes my posture is an issue. Uhg. I need to stop looking at my fret hand.

My wife has tried to throw this chair away a couple of times too. You are all wise.

I have a some torn ligaments in my shoulder so its been hard with moving my upper arm of the strumming hand much. But no excuses, the chair is doing me no favors.

Thank you for the constructive points.

Thank you for the kind words. My goal has always been to play and sing. Better posture will help both a ton.

I honestly didn’t know how this would be received. My voice has changed over the years. I do need to work on my posture it will help both signing and my guitar. Thank you for your comment. Btw i dig the avitar Elixir, I loved the pipes.

Big congrats on your first AVOYP Jason!  It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there and this is a huge first step!

I wasn’t familiar with this song, but it had a nice, steady groove and your voice was a good fit for it. Would love to see you stand in a future song. Since you can sing while playing, standing is the natural next step  Great job!! Looking forward to seeing more from you :slightly_smiling_face:

Standing and playing a great suggestion. I absolutely need to stand more often and is actually a very important personal step for me as well.

That was super cool, Jason!! Love it! You did amazing, both playing and singing, totally gave me the Nirvana version vibe, you nailed the slightly depressive, melancholy atmosphere Kurt embodied  :+1: Very well done! Please give us more!!
It is also, great timing as I remember this tune most fondly from being away with my friends at New Year in the mid nineties, sitting around a campfire, enjoying the extravagance of youth… such good memories!  :joy: Thanks for sharing!! :sunglasses:

I could do that. Thank you for the rad comments, its way cool.

Thank you for watching it.

I like to play of others and I am stoked that it invoked some cool memories for you. The 90s were some good years with great memories. Mine are my friends in Reno, Nevada, The Sierra Mountians, Snowboarding and meeting my wife and of course, the great music.

Hey Jason, sorry it’s taken me a couple of days to get around to check this out, but am so happy I did
You’ve been a real supportive, engaging member of the Community and it can be important for many of us to share where we are up to in our playing for all kinds of reasons. You have a good voice and sense of rhythm which is half the battle.
Nice first share.
I’m not going to join in the ‘poor posture’ chorus as I often play lying down on the couch watching TV
One thing that did look (but not sound) odd was the doubling up of strumming speed for the ‘pumping’ sections. Did you try it using upstrokes?
Anyway, you’re over the hump now, so purely up to your desire how often you share songs. Keep on rockin’ :sunglasses:

I get a lot of satisfaction in seeing people do well after working hard. Its hard to find a solid community like Justin has over here. It feels natural to try and be part of it after I have recived such a gift myself.

Thank you for the words of encouragment on my voice and rhythm. Everyones comments are humbling.

Huh thats an interesting point. I am not sure, I don’t think I even noticed. I do play a lot fast pumping downstroke stuff, It must be that punk rock in me. It could be my subconscious default when I feel off some.

I have already fixed the chair situation some
I need to work on slowing the hand down and getting better well established up strokes. I need to absolutly get better with my off beat hits, better upstroke would help a lot.

Thank you for the insight.
:metal:

I am skulking around looking for posts from others so I can enjoy some music this morning!

This is great & to play & sing that well after such a short time is really cool!

Thank you for having the courage to share! Its quite good!

I know you are concerned with strumming & posted on my song about the strumming. I would like to recommend something for you. DOnt strum from the elbow, strum from the wrist. Keep your hand close to the body of the guitar-I even keep my pinky touching the guitar when I strum. It allows for more control & speed & finesse.

Wow AlyKat

Thank you for taking the time to watch this. Man I was all sorts of nervous posting it recording it and the posting it. I have gotten more comfortable since I have been in this Blues course.

Reading these nice things you said about my singing has restored some confidence. I had a horrible day yesterday finding out I lost someone very dear to me. Stuff like that can really take the wind out of ones sails. I did start a song about it lyrics only, no melody.

I absolutly appreciate those insights about the strumming. I will try that with the anchor, it sure seems to be working well for you. It sounds hard to get a full range of strumming like that but it makes sense considering that I have been doing it with my picking now and it has made a huge difference in control. I seem to have no problem being able to move up and down the strings ok.

Thank you again. It is very kind of you. It is such a joy to play music that is pleasing to others.
