My Happy Life

I wrote and copyrighted this song last year. I titled it, ‘My Happy Life’. I played it in the key of D, with 3 chords, to suit my voice such as it is. This video, as it’s on Justin Guitar, is played on guitar. I also did a 5 string banjo video of me playing and singing it, but it needs work. I could have added a few chords probably, at least a D7 in a couple of places, but didn’t for this video. I wanted to get it in one take and it’s pretty long at just over 6 minutes, so no room for error by getting too fancy. I hope everyone enjoys it. I’m nearing the end of grade 2 after about a year into Justin Guitar, and really enjoying that, along with all the other instruments I mess around with.

Well done on producing an original and sharing, Jim. Enjoyed the story.

Hope you don’t mind, I made some small edits to your post to share the video now it is available.

Well done Jim on producing a great original song. I really enjoyed the story and the song. Keep them coming :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Very nice Jim! I love to see and I’m full of admiration when people can express themselves with an original song and tell a good story…well done!

I would have liked to have the written Lyrics though, to understand better, english is not my mothertongue.

@jvlynch This is great, Jim. Thanks for sharing.
I really liked how you “spiced up” parts with just letting chord ring without strumming and let pop your singing.

Well done Jim great to hear something that means a lot to the guy writing it and playing it well done mate cheers HEC

Thanks Carreta, I had to change it up here and there as it was long and the verses would have gotten too repetitive with just 2 choruses, so I used the chorus melody in a few other spots, and the stop-strum here and there, along with a ‘frustrated voice change’ on ‘gladly’ and ‘fine’ too. I did have fun with it. I got the idea for it, like many, and jotted it down. I thought about it a while later, wrote a couple more verses, and then came back to it again to finish. You have to let the song come to you I believe. If I try to force it, it usually doesn’t work.

Silvia 80, here are the lyrics for My Happy Life. Key of D, with 3 chords: D, G, A. I could have added other chords, but kept it simple for recording more easily.

My Happy Life (with corresponding melody information) by James Lynch copyright 2024

(Sung to section 1 melody)

Let me tell you a story

Abou-out my life.

I should start it, by sayin’

I ain’t got no wife.

It almost happened. But it didn’t.

And this here is why,

It’s the first time, I remember,

A girl made me cry.

Chorus/bridge: (sung to section 2 melody)

How I loved that girl,

Loved to hold her and kiss her.

Never thought the day would come,

When I really wouldn’t miss her.

I love to go out

Have a drink and dance and mingle

But the truth of it is,

I love bein’ single.

(sung to section 1 melody)

I first saw her at the Quik Stop

My smile met hers.

I asked her out, and we dated.

For several years.

Then one night we were together

I said I-I love you.

She started cryin’, thru the tears.

She said I love you too.

(sung to section 1 melody)

I said we should get married.

She said I want to too.

But first there’s just one thing,

I’d like you to do.

I said anything, just ask me

I had no clue what.

She said darlin’, I love you,

But get that hair cut.

(sung to section 2 melody)

I said sure, I’ll do anything,

Because I love you.

If it makes you happy,

It’s the least I can do.

If it pleases you, I’ll do it.

Just say the word.

She said, well, while you’re at it

Go shave off that beard.

(sung to section 1 melody)

I got it cut. I shaved my face.

It wasn’t worth fussin’.

Then she asked could I learn

To talk without cussin’.

I did all she asked.

I could tell though, she was thinkin’

I asked what’s wrong now dear?

She said, I wish you’d quit drinkin’.

(Sung to section 1 melody)

(with disdain, raspy voice, sarchastic like)

I said ‘FINE.’ ‘GLADLY’

I’ll do it for you.

All because I love you,

It’s the least I can do.

Then I saw that look.

I thought, surely she’s jokin’

She said no love, one more thing,

You gotta quit smokin’.

(sung to section 1 melody)

(with a bit more disdain)

I said fine, Love, I’ll do it.

She said, “I must confess,.

You gotta look in a mirror

The next time you dress.”

We were out, she said no

To just one more dance.

And I wondered if this is

What they call romance.

(sung to section 1 melody)

(more disdain)

She sat close by the door

All the way home.

She had a headache. And I knew

I’d be sleepin’ alone.

She got out, slammed the door hard.

and I was dumbstruck

She yelled over her shoulder,

Get rid of that truck.

(sung to section 2 melody

I thought no, I won’t do it.

I’m done doin’ for you.

I’ve done all the doin’

That one man can do.

You’ve pushed me too far,

You don’t have a clue.

Tomorrow I’m callin’

To tell you we’re through.

(sung to section 1 melody)

The next mornin’ I rose early

I didn’t shave. I lit a smoke

I called her up, and I cussed.

I broke it off. She barely spoke.

And the very next thing

I’ll make it perfectly clear (music stops. on ‘beer’ play G, A, B lead in to Chorus/C chord)

I walked over to the fridge

And grabbed me a beer.

Chorus: (Section 2 melody)

How I loved that girl,

Loved to hold her and kiss her.

Never thought this day would come,

But I really won’t miss her.

I love to go out

Have a drink and dance and mingle

But the truth of it is,

I love bein’ single.

Repeat:

Yes the truth of it is,

I love bein’ single.
