My new Martin

It’s a great guitar. I have D28. Bought it a few years ago, used, so it was already played in. Last year I decided it was too big for me and I traded it in for a smaller one. After a few weeks I decided that I had made a mistake. Such is life! And then a couple of months ago it appeared in the same shop. Guess what. I bought it back again. Never to be parted.

Great story John! We never know what we’ve got till it’s gone.

I bought a new 00028 which I’ve had about 3 years. My first steel guitar. I had been messing around on a nylon string guitar for a while, but never taking it seriously.
At first I had a lot of trouble adjusting, mainly because I needed so much force to get a good note. Then I restrung a few times and now play with 10/47 strings which are pretty light and much easier to play. More recently I heard that a lot of Martins come with very high action and have to be adjusted before they play well. Has anybody else heard anything similar? I’m wondering if I should get it adjusted.

Hi Chris
Yes I think it’s true that no matter what the make, you can find different set ups with guitars.
My Martin played beautifully straight out of the box but I’ve heard of others needing adjustment.
A lot of it is individual taste though. Some people prefer a higher action as it’s better for certain types of sounds.
Having It adjusted isn’t a huge job so I’d tale it to your local store or a Luthier to get their opinion and have it altered according to your needs.
The 00028 is a beautiful guitar and it’s certainly worth spending some time on the set up.
That said I’d make sure you find someone who specialises in Martin guitars as thats a premier model you have there and she’s worth a lot of money.

Welcome to the club Jason. Mind you, it’s taken me
nearly 5 years to buy a ‘travel’ guitar.

Thank you for your thoughtful answer.
Yes it is a beauty and I love playing it. With the lighter strings it seems to be pretty good for me, but still is quite a bit of work. I will take it to the store where I bought it and have them take a look. My dream is to be able to play blues in the style of John Hurt or Reverend Gary Davis, but I still have a long but interesting road ahead.
And I appreciate the advice. What Martin do you have?

I have a 0015 all mahogany. It’s a cracking guitar and perfect for blues and fingerstyle playing which I’m really into at the moment.
All the best with your advancement. You’ve certainly got the right guitar and with the right amount of dedication you can achieve anything you want.

Awesome choice!

I have the Martin GPC Kia X series, and along with my 1999 Stratocaster, is all I have gigged with.

I want to add another solid acoustic-electric to my rig, but it will probably be a Martin :+1:

Sorry I’ve only just seen your reply. I like all sorts of blues but I’m a big fan of the Delta blues style guitar. The thumping bass and the melody woven in between is such a beautiful sound. What’s your chosen style of music?

Must have missed this Jason, very very nice ! A belated Happy NGD.

I live in Australia and Martin guitars are few and far between in the shops here. I actually had never played one until recently and have a funny story. I teach guitar to people in their later years and one of these students has a three quarter size Martin acoustic. She constantly complains about it saying it sounds terrible. I had not noticed this as I teach in a large group so when they all strum I can’t hear individuals and they’re all beginners anyway so not the best at strumming yet. But this day she happened to arrive early before anyone else and so I asked her if I could have a look at the guitar because she said she wasn’t going to play it again, instead preferring a cheaper instrument she bought second hand. Anyway, I started playing it and it really was the most beautiful guitar I’ve ever played. The neck was So smooth and lovely to hold. The owner was so shocked at how it sounded too. I wanted to keep it! Lol but we realized it was the way she was playing it that made it sound terrible. I’m sure I could have offered her $50 for it before I played it and showed her how nice it sounded when strummed properly. Instead I showed her how to strum more gently using the pick. She loves it now and I might buy myself one! Beautiful guitar !

So much down to how you play with an acoustic, tone is indeed in your hands.
