Neck dive isssue

Hello folks

I have a question
The neck of one of my guitars dives ( its an electric )
not too much ( its not pointing at the floor ) but enough to make it not very comfortable when playing

so have you any tips / suggestions on how to resolve this issue ?
anyone had the same problem ?

holding the strap at the neck instead of the body helped but it looks like its not recommended for electric guitars

( yeah I know that its important to test a guitar in store and buy something comfortable but I really wanted that model and it was not in store anywhere ! the guitar is awesome , it just have that tiny neck dive issue )

Mac

I found that picture on the web , it illustrates my problem

How wide is your strap and what is on the back of the strap?

I have a guitar with neck dive. If I use a cheap strap that has a shiny material that basically does nothing.

If I use a wide leather strap (2.5 or even 3 inches) with a rough back, the dive is gone.

This might not help you but has cured the problem for me

I have this strap

the inside is quite smooth

It’s hard to say but 50mm width is at the narrow end of the scale. I’m reluctant to say go and spend more money on a wider strap because that might not fix the problem. I don’t know if anyone like your teacher has a wider one for you to try?

I have an SG that is prone to neck diving. What works for me is a good strap. I use a D’Addario suede one, and it’s grippy enough to hold the guitar in place. Also, my forearm is always laying on the edge of the body, and that limits any movements at all.

Going from 2 to 2.5 inches (50-64mm) made the difference for me (with my xplorer shaped guitar) but I can’t promise it will solve your problem. 3 inches (75mm) would be even better. A suede back definitely helps. The extra benefit of a wider strap should be that it’s more comfortable as it’s spreading the weight of the guitar over a wider area

the bass straps are even wider

ah this one looks nice , what do you think ?

I can only say that if that doesn’t work then no strap is going to fix it! Should be really comfortable if nothing else

I got a red one of these from Promenade Music, Morecambe

It’s showing red out of stock but they have these two in stock.

You could try a quick and free temporary fix … tie something small and heavy to the body end of your strap.

ah yes
I did that !
I bought a small weight for diving and I clip it at the end of my strap

It did help but as you say its only a temporary solution because my shoulders does not like the extra weight

I think Ill buy the wide levy strap
as Matt says , worse thing would be to have a comfy strap to put on my Grestch

If it does not work … should I ask a Luthier to put another strap button lower on the body ?

One of my straps came with a cord that is used to tie around the headstock (just behind the nut, under the strings) and then hook the strap to that. It will solve the headstock diving because it is holding the headstock directly, but it also tends to shift the center of where the guitar hangs a little.

Martin makes an official looking item, but you’ll see folks using shoe strings, too (google search, select images).

Yeah I thought it might be a good idea but I read somewhere that it was not recommended on electric guitars , that it might twist the neck

is it true ?

hmm, I have see this done more on an acoustic, so a lighter guitar. I haven’t thought it a problem on my SG (famous for neck dive). The additional weight may pull a bit on the neck, detuning it compared to an acoustic. Sure seems to me I wouldn’t expect damage.

So, I don’t know with authority, but I am not concerned for my SG.

@GrumpyMac didn’t read all the answers so don’t know it this was suggested.

Glue a strip if suede the same width of the strap you already have.

If possible , Ill try Mc gyver’s stuff only if nothing else work

You could try Amazon, the place I usually get mine. Brown leather front and non slip on the back around ÂŁ25.00, I forget the name. Works for me and if it does not for you, easy returns.

Pretty much all my stable wear Minotaur from Thomann. Not cheap but never have neck dive issues and I have heavy LPs, SG and G&L Teles. This ones 85mm wide some of the others are wider, circa 100 mm.
