New old dog - hello from Pete in Manchester

Hi. I’m Pete, an old dog from Manchester in the UK. I quit learning 35 years ago as I needed to prioritise my career. Now I’m back. I actually have a question: why pay for the App when the website is free? Better content? More user friendly? TIA

Welcome to the forum Pete. Don’t use the app so can’t help you there

Keep using the free website version until you find it does not work for you, or you want something a little more.

Hi Peter,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I started here 4 and a half years ago and there was no app … and what I saw and heard about it a year later from a friend, it was not for me either (not because of the costs) … a lot has changed and added, I here almost only positive feedback from users … but I am also sure that you will learn to play well without it … many many many have come before me :grinning_face_with_big_eyes: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

The website is mostly free but there are some great exceptions that should be worth more than double the money…so you can definitely invest in those too soon,

There is a trial period for the app, so you can decide for yourself whether you like the idea by learning that way …

Whatever you choose…you’ve come to the right (web) address :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Greetings,Rogier

Hi Peter, welcome to the community, have fun with the courses with or without the app. I use the app because I want to support the project and actually I use the app for the songs as backing tracks to play along to. I work through the courses on the website, but of course it’s a matter of taste.
Regards Withold

Hi Pete,

Great to see you, I have a similar journey. Just getting back into things too. I had a free trial of the app and it only goes up to grade 3 so the website is definitely superior.

Hello Pete.

More on your specific question below.

Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny. Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Now - the App vs the Website. It may help to know the history.
Justin first imagined the App as a karaoke play-along tool to supplement and complement the thorough beginner courses on the website. It became so popular, and the working relationship with the app developers Musopia so fruitful, that the possibility of including some beginner course video lessons was explored and brought to life. The website always was and always will be where the bulk of the beginner material (and all other material) is located. The lessons have the videos plus written content plus tabs plus downloadable files in some places. The app has developed and expanded incredibly though and many people use it only to learn from, not fully realising that the website offers additional content. Where the app shines and offers something the website does not is the play-along functionality - the raison d’etre and original purpose of the app. Guitareoke if you will. Thousands and thousands of users have already attested to that being ‘worth the admission price alone’.

Cheers. Richard

Welcome to the community from another old dog. Started learning with Justin at 60 and still at it for over 7 years now. It’s a great site and community. Enjoy the ride!

Don’t you have to pay for those now?

Tabs for the individual song lessons require a subscription. This conversation is referring to the graded lessons and modules. Some of those graded lessons and modules do have tabs, for example for riffs presented. Some lessons also include downloadable resources.

I’ve been using Justin’s free lessons for 13 years now. They have made a huge impact on my progress. I purchase various things from Justin to show my support for his generosity.

Good point. I stand corrected!!

Hi Pete, welcome to the community forum. I mostly use the website, but I have subscribed to the app to give back to the Justin site. You can demo the app for free to see if it is something that would be useful to you. This is if you are at the beginner level.

Hi Pete,

The app has a few other parts than playing along to the songs and Grades 1-3 lessons. There is a tuner, chord exercises, strumming practice and foundations, four scales practice and technique exercises.

Hello Pete & Welcome!!!

As @DSC1755 mentions, the app is much more than just “guitar karaoke”, although I admit that’s what I get out of it the most.

Not sure if you realize but the website & the app DO NOT SYNC. That may change in the future, but for now at least, if your complete a lesson on the app it doesn’t show as complete on Justin’s website. Same thing if you stumble across one of Justin’s lessons on YouTube - it not going to show as completed on the website.

I do watch the occasional lesson in the app - for example when I am sitting in a doctor’s waiting room or am waiting to pick up a family member… I’ll sit in the car & watch a lesson.

Overall, I think it’s a good value & therefore I use the app often…
just my 2 cents!
