NEW YORK, NEW YORK – As covered by Crocodile1 and LBro

Hi Phil,
It was certainly a tough one due to so much brass. We really had to work to get it to sound half way realistic! Then on the singing, it was shocking at first how much better Frank sang this. It turned out to be very tough to come close to what he did!

Take care,
LB

Hey LBro and Leo! @crocodile1. Good to hear from the two of you again.

Wow! An interesting song choice from you both. I think you “rocked” this challenge and I really enjoyed it. You selected a different kind of music than usual - a genre described on Google as a jazzy show tune. Great work!

I’ll also be looking forward to your new one with your daughter.

Hi there Pam!
Nice of you to drop in and check out our offering. I did not know it was a Jazzy Show Tune. I would call it something like a “Full Orchestral Band Song”. Thanks on the “great work”!

Yes, the daughter put me off 3 months or so. If all goes to plan I will track here the 22nd of this month. So I should post that project a week or so after that.

So where is your new one? I have not seen anything from you for what seems like ages?

Be well,
LB

Trivia: Many believe Sinatra sang the original, but it was the theme song for the Scorsese film starring Robert de Niro and Liza Minelli for which it received a Golden Globe nomination. (De Niro didn’t like the original and Kander & Ebb reluctantly had to do a quick rewrite).
Fancy having a go at Minelli’s version, little Brother?

I’m actually working on one. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer. Yeah, my last one was in January. It just takes me a long time. Long time to find a song and long time to get through the tech stuff I chose to challenge myself with. But I still enjoy it all.

@LBro @crocodile1 this was very very good! I enjoyed it throughout… Challenges are good and I’m sure you can better appreciate the results after some sweat  Thanks for sharing this video…I much enjoyed the pictures as well!

Hello everyone!
Thanks for good and interesting feedback.
I was surprised myself when LBro suggested doing a cover of this song. But he was persistent and convincing
I realized how important this song is to him. And I tried to make everything as close to the original as possible. We had a bit of an argument about the bass and drums levels, but LBro won here too :grinning:
About the guitar… I recorded a little acoustic intro, but eventually threw it out because it looked like an unsuitable false tooth…
In general, it turned out that it is, and thanks again to all those who responded.
Keep on rocking,
Leo

No way on this end Brian. I mean your Inn is not the Marriott now is it?
I will leave Liza to herself as she is in rare form on the link you posted! The gal can really belt it out!

The poor song writers could make no one happy De Niro wanted a rewrite and Frank changed up some of their lyrics! What was that song? I’ll do it my way?

Take care,
LB

I dunno… We’ve had a coupla movers an’ shakers pass thru -
I’m sure we could accommodate you an’ any posse you turn up with
Even your compadre thinks ol’ Blue Eyes was the original

Wow that was stunning LB. You are a little too hard on yourself in that initial write up. I can see how the brass would be a challenge - midi I assume - as there is so much going on. But then also the strings and keys, so a mammoth project but well pulled off. I was a little concerned about how your vocal style would fit - my mother was a huge Sinatra fan so he was always on the record player - it worked really really well, superb in fact, especially at the upper end of your range. Great stuff.

Anything the draws @batwoman out of the shadows, has got to be a good thing. So well done you guys, not quite the “usual” JGC Collab but priceless.

Hi Pam,
I hope your new project works out well for you! I am waiting for it to post too. That is the thing. Enjoying what you do is one reason we pull our hair out on some of these!

Be well,
LB

Hi Silvia,
So good of you to stop by and have a listen. On the pics, I found a ton of Frank, but few of the band. So what you saw is what you get!

Take good care!

Hi Toby,
Yep the brass is fired by midi and a lot of tracks of it. On the first part I supplied 12 midi tracks… I think on strings and keys, Leo did a great job there.

Indeed, getting Batwoman out of the cobwebs is a good thing!

If you liked the vox in this one, wait till the next. I am not sure I fit Frank real well. But the next song is a rocker and much better IMHO. Coming back from the intense job of motherhood is NaNa. Somehow I talked her into the next project. It is completely done save for NaNa’s vocals. If all goes well, we will trach those next weekend.

Take good care,
LB

Really enjoyed the cover, guys, I think you did it justice. Maybe not stretching things like the Pistols did on My Way, which is probably a good call.

I think you pulled the vocal off pretty well, LBro, Sinatra is such a classic so a serious challenge (like trying to do Mercury I guess).

Instrumentation worked, as you say getting the digital horns to sound like a full orchestra like Frank sang over was a big ask. As for the debate about bass and drums. I think I would have dripped the bass a few dB, perhaps used an upright acoustic bass digital instrument?

And the video was a fabulous travelogue of NY.

All in all, a winner

I didn’t like it … I really liked it. :sunglasses:
Along with “My Way” these pretty much became Sinatra’s signature tunes. One of his albums was often on the record player; spinning around, at 33 1/3 RPM, back in my early years.
Such iconic performances by FS, this is a tough one to cover and bring something new; and imho think this collaboration made a very good job with it in this production.
Well done … :clap::clap: :clap:

Hi David,
Thanks for taking this one in. Yeah, I for one can’t really see how it could be rocked out. I mean it could, but I think a lot of the meaning of the song might be lost.

Ha, Frank and Mercury… no kidding, both challenging crooners there! Though I never heard of Mercury being labeled as a crooner.

I think on drums and bass, we finally got them in a reasonable spot. But like you I think they could have been a bit “softer” and not so bold. The thing that drives me to that is that this is not a band. Rather it is an orchestral arrangement and production.

On the video I did not have much choice. Lots of Frank is out there, but little of the band. I had to go back to the days of Tommy Dorsey to find any band pics. So, the next choice was NYC. Good thing the song was centered on that subject!

Carry on and be well!

Thanks so much for the kind review! I think a lot of us grew up to appreciate Frank and his signature tunes. I will never again under estimate Frank’s ability on these songs. He is flat out good. I think I also came to realize why some say he was not always in tune. He performed a lot live and the accuracy needed to sing multiple notes per some of the words is challenging. Just a little off on timing and it does not work out well. When doing his work live, night after night. I am sure he missed from time to time the target…

All the best and thanks again for stopping by!

Nice job, guys, putting this one together. I know there was a lot of time and effort to get to the end. I would have liked to have heard Leo’s loose tooth guitar in spots, or something actually being played. That being said, the end result reflects a well put together piece.

Hi Dave,
Yeah, the elusive guitar… I had a demo of it, but I could not hear it in the demo. So I am at a loss as to whether it was a good thing or not. Just have to trust Leo on that. His tastes are good in music, so if it was below his good standards, I can understand not using it.

Thanks on the overall comments!

Take care,
Dave
