Greetings to all, my name is John and I am about to turn 75 next week. Playing guitar has been a pipe-dream for me since I messed about as a teen on friends guitars, back then all you had was sheet music and no internet or other technology we now have. I shelved this idea and pursued other interests (surfing & girls). However now I am retired and have had to give up playing golf I have a lot more free time so took up the challenge to learn the guitar. I joined Justin Guitar lessons 4 months ago after a short period trialling other online tuition sites then came across Justinâs lessons app. I am so happy to have stumbled across this site as I am blown away with how quickly I have progressed with the quality of lessons and backup provided, with no BS or pressure to purchase other product. I have difficulties with some aspects however I find with practice and perseverance I am conquering them. My guitar journey is proving to be such an immensely enjoyable experience that I wonder why I left it so long to do.
Welcome John,
Good to see you here, and that you have found the JG site so helpful. Thatâs certainly the case for me, itâs long journey and as long as we enjoy it along the way then all is well. There are a lot of helpful and friendly people on the forum.
As for giving up the golf, I can tell you that I find guitar and music far less frustrating than playing golf thatâs for sure. However you do have some amazing golf courses mate, Iâve been to a couple on Sth Island.
Enjoy your journey
Hi John,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun
Great to read that you enjoy it so much, and now is always the best time to start (With the exception of a long decades or music career, then it is useful to at least start as a teenager ,but time machines donât exist and regret is not a nice emotion
)
Enjoy it to the max
Greetings,Rogier
Welcome John, never too old to rock n roll !
Great introduction John. You will surely enjoy the learning experience with the Justin Guitar team and students, though itâs debatable whether a guitar can really replace surfing, golf and girls.
Hello and welcome!
welcome to the forum. Iâm married to a Kiwi and did my first ever open mic on the north island, Kiwis are cool
Welcome John! Sorry to hear you had to give up golf, but at least you can play guitar in any weather, at any time (well, most times) of the day or night! Regarding those difficulties on your guitar journey: we all have them. Donât be shy about asking for advice here, or even just sharing your frustration. Youâll find plenty of good ideas and good company!
Hi John, welcome to the community forum.
Really good to meet you John, like we say never to old cheers
Hey John, good on ya!
Youâve started a decade later than me, and I too have many similar feelings/situations.
As you know from the miles under your keel, progress is in fits and starts, but always upward.
This community is a wonderful resource if you find youâre struggling/wondering/noodling with something you can search the community for previous threads that might have addressed your ideas. Or, start a new thread if the search comes up with nothing.
Thereâs even a group for âOld Dogsâ you might want to join, jump in here and see if the smell of the kennel is appealing: Older guitar students - can 'old dogs' learn new tricks?
see you in your posts
Bruce
Way to go!
Hello John.
Good on you for beginning in your prime.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a âcommunityâ. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.
Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny. Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.
That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.
Cheers. Richard
