NGD: Introducing Ramon (Ibanez AR420)

We have an online marketplace in Switzerland that’s mostly used by people in the French speaking part (where I live) - so it’s quite a local thing. I always keep an eye on the used guitars as you can occasionally get a good deal.

I was watching this Ibanez AR420 for a while as it looked like a good one and for a low price. I’ve always liked the look of this guitar even though it’s definitely not for everyone (very vintage-retro looking, with gold hardware and an abalone binding). But then the price suddenly went down a lot. Weird! I contacted the seller, whose name was Ramon. He said it was in 99.9999 % perfect condition but he only wanted cash and he clearly wanted to sell it quick. I was a bit suspicious. Also the messages were a bit odd. So I was a bit apprehensive going along to his house.

Anyway, the Ramon I imagined, and the real Ramon turned out to be very different. He was a very sweet gentle guy a few years older than me, who sings in a rock band (70’s and 80’'s covers). He bought the guitar new 5 years ago as he wanted to play electric while singing some songs. But it didn’t work out and he only played it a couple of times at home. The guitar was literally, as he said, in completely new condition. I couldn’t find any hint of use and it was perfect, and also perfectly set up (although the strings must be 5 years old!). It plays beautifully.

So I paid the amount he was asking (equivalent of 200 US$), and then he tried to give me back some of the money I gave him. It’s the first time I had to insist that the seller keeps all the money I gave him or I would have felt like I robbed him. It seemed he just wanted to make space. He then wanted to give me some pedals for free. I took one which does some vocalising effects (Boss VE 20). We chatted for a long time about music (he’s a big Marc Bolan / Rex fan) and afterwards he sent me some recordings of his band which were great. He is a very good singer. So all-in-all I got a nice guitar in new condition for a good price (its about 600-700 USD new) and had a very nice experience meeting him.

I know that some people give names to their guitars. I never did that, but I’m making an exception here and calling this one ā€œThe Ramonā€ (dedicated to him because he was such a nice guy). I’m going to go and see his band playing live later in the year. So I made a friend as well as getting a guitar (that I don’t need )

The body is Okume with a Maple top and maple neck. It has a Jatoba fretboard (which I like a lot) and Super 58 pickups. To me it’s a beautiful guitar and my wife approves.

Hey Ian!
What a lucky purchase of a really beautiful guitar! The abalone binding is very classy & the tailpiece looks really unique!!! I also like the inlays in the fretboard - although I ā€˜ve never even heard of jatoba!!! I’m not familiar with okume either… can you post pics of the back & sides, maybe the headstock too?
Have lots of Fun with ā€œThe Ramoneā€ -
maybe even turn back time to 1976 and play The Ramones first real Punk Rock single ā€œBlitzkrieg Bopā€!!! :sign_of_the_horns::sign_of_the_horns::sign_of_the_horns::guitar::guitar::guitar::sign_of_the_horns::sign_of_the_horns::sign_of_the_horns:

That’s great Ian. A guitar and a friend on the same day.
Enjoy

Hey Tod,

Here are the headstock, back and sides.

Jatoba (fretboard) is a south American wood apparently sometimes called Brazilian Cherry (had to look that up). It’s a very hard wood.

Okume (body) is a wood from West Africa and Ibanez use it on many of their solid body guitars. I’m guessing that the wood is heavily stained, so I don’t know what it would look like unstained. As you can see the Okume body and maple neck are stained the same colour which basically looks like the back of many mahogany bodied guitars.

Okoume nowadays is often used as a cheaper and lighter alternative to the harder and harder to get mahogany.

That is a handsome guitar! Enjoy it and happy NGD to you!

Wow what a sick guitar. I am not even a gold guy but that really matches well. The inlay is amazing.

What about the pedal? No photo? That was a score aalso.

Bonjour Ramon–that’s some serious bling you’re sporting → now you gotta get Ian to up his game and dress to match (ou peut-ĆŖtre qu’il y est dĆ©jĆ  ? )

Happy NGD Ian, that is quite a find.

Hey Jason,

Here’s a photo of the pedal I got for free. It’s a Boss VE-20 Vocal processor. Does reverb, echo, harmony, and a whole bunch of other things and has a basic loop function. I haven’t tried it yet - too busy with the guitar  to think about singing at the moment. But I will try it soon as I have to do some AVOYPs of 3 songs I have been working on.

I had a look online at the reviews and it seems to be quite good. A bit old now, and replaced by a Boss VE-22 or something, but it’s rated quite highly.

Yeah I’ve got some way to go before I’m as good looking at the guitar. It sure has some bling.

Holy cow.

Thats a huge score. Those have everything you need.

TBH, I think older is better with effects pedals, there are going to be people who have spend hours and hours dialing this baby in and written up all they know. You will be be the benifit of all this sacred knowledge
