Nirvana - Oh Me cover

Hello! It’s been a while since I’ve been on the community or posted anything here.

Just wanted to share a story about this cover. Last year I started listening to Nirvana for the first time (I mean, I don’t totally live under a rock so I knew some of their songs, but never really listened to them), and after listening to their MTV live album, really wanted to learn their version of Oh Me by the Meat Puppets. I studied the video to figure out how to play the guitar part, and found myself instead very fascinated by watching Kurt sing. Again, only living partially under a rock, I had known what happened tragically to Kurt but I don’t think had ever actually watched a video of him. Even though the song wasn’t his own, I could see and feel his emotions transmitted through the lyrics and into my headphones. Perhaps his ability to do that is what made his death that much more devastating.

Anyway, I decided to sing on this track, and I simply can’t do it well enough while playing guitar so I recorded it separately and didn’t film it, and I am much happier with my performance that way (I’m very self-conscious about singing). I hope you like it!
P.S. If you make it to the end you can enjoy a special guest vocal appearance

That was great Gina. I am so stoked for you and that you have found Kurt and Nirvana music and also that you really got a good listen. I think your rendition was awesome, I think you did a really great job. And your signing was really good, dont be down on your self. I kmow its hard i got my own hurdles. But seriously I honestly think you sounded great and your guitar work was awesome as well. I am thrilled you posted and that you chose to post one of my favorite bands, I was right in the thick of it during the early 90s and I was amazingly lucky to see kurt live and all the other cool bands in the bay area so I have a solid sense of Nirvana and Alt rock of the time.

The Nirvana unplugged is as emotional gripping music as you can listen to in my opinion. If you really want to wade further into some more of kurt’s acustic emotional powerful acustics take a look at “With the Lights Out” box set. It has some amazing stuff on it.

Thanks again for posting for us.

That was a lovely rendition! I still listen to that album a lot. Most of my musical listening is stuck in the 90s (Smashing Pumpkins, Peal Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden).

Keep recording and sharing!

Very well done, i enjoyed it very much, being a nirvana fan myself.

If you want to know more about Kurt’s life, i’d suggest a) reading some of his diaries, b) the book “The 27 club” , c) Come as you are (biography) or d) listening to the complete discography of Nirvana. Bleach was recorded with the original drummer, Chad Channing, but was later kicked out in favor of Dave Grohl.

Have fun!!

That takes me back. Great job.

The bass is magic. Great addition to sail the guitar solo on which was fabulous, over your lovely singing. The dog has a bright future also.

Hi Gina!
Good guitar work, solid bass vibe & your vocals really nailed it all together!!! Very, very enjoyable listen to my ears (I ‘m not even much of a Nirvana fan)!!!

Thank you for the comment and support! I know my singing isn’t the worst ever, but for some reason I just hate the sound of my own voice even when I hear recordings of myself just talking  How amazing it must have been to see him live! I will definitely have to check out that set, thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you! Though I am a 90s baby, I feel like I really just discovered 90’s music in my adulthood. I love it!

Thank you for listening and for the feedback!

Great performance and production Gina. I wasn’t familiar with the track but it was a pleasure to listen to. Vocal pitch sounds spot on!

Hi Gina,

Funny enough I rewatched the unplugged concert just the other day - and here you are.
Great job playing and vocal.

Kurt had that special quality a lot of performers don’t seem to have these days - he seemed to feel and believe in what he was doing. Wasn’t all about image and money.
Good times - though sadly not for him.

Haha, I know this feeling very well!
Yes, your singing was really nice! (Like everything was nice in the song!)
I hope you’ll keep singing often.
Because in my case, I noticed I got (a bit) better with practice over time, but in recent months very rarely sang and noticed my singing became worse again :frowning:
