Nirvana Unplugged covers of covers - "man who sold the world" & "oh me"

Happy new year community! I’m wrapping up my study of power chords from JG Grade 2 Module 12.

As I said in my last post on here I’ve really taken a dive back into Nirvana Unplugged. Some of my favorite songs from that show are the covers.

Here is my go at “Man who sold the world” - originally by David Bowie. There’s some good versions of this from this community which I searched for when learning the song. I particularly enjoyed the one performed by Mari in one of the open mic events from a few years ago. I didn’t know her but understand she was greatly loved by the community here.

And lastly here is “Oh me” - originally by The Meat Puppets. One of the “brothers meat”, Curt Kirkwood, somewhat famously uses a quarter as a pick playing guitar with Nirvana on the Unplugged show. I liked learning this song for Beginner Module 12 because it has a series of power chords moving right up the neck and also a reasonably approachable solo based around 1st position minor pentatonic scale.

Thank you for listening.

Great job singing and playing, its always killer seeing someone playing something off this unplugged. Its one of my personal favorites, the extended version is especially good if you are a meat puppets fan, it might be difficult to find these day.

Again good job, I enjoyed it, Thanks for posting

A good couple of performances Andrew. Particularly liked Oh Me, you really delivered an accomplished vocal, as well as guitar, with it. The Man WHo Sold The World was not too shabby either.

Wow, really great cover. I’ve never tried doing Man Who Sold the World and it has me wondering why since I’ve done other Bowie tunes.

Thank you all for taking the time to write a reply and check out the videos I posted. I appreciate it!

@Ontime I’ve been meaning to look for that extended version as I remember we discussed it a few months ago when I last posted. I’ve been listening to this podcast on Spotify on and off for the past couple of years you might be interested “60 songs that explain the 90s”. There’s an episode later on in the series on “Smells like teen spirit” and it has an interview with Courtney Love - the host ends it with “wowzers” after the interview. lol it’s quite a trip.

I checked that out. Yeah, that is standard Courtney. I love her honestly. she gets a bad rap but just lays it out there. Most of all those stories I know about. I don’t really doubt them, other than her, claiming being a mother figure. I know she was a party girl. :joy: I mean whatever. Yes, she does rock, I have been to a few of her shows and she is good, she plays a great show. She can rock too. I always admired her for that no holds barred attitude.

The comments about the meat brothers was cool.

The Bowie original of “man who sold the world” definitely has a similar feel - maybe even more dreamy and mysterious feeling. I’ve listened to the original a little - I actually find that percussive instrument (I learned it’s called the guiro) with the wooden ridged ratchet sound to be very distracting and overpowering in the recorded version. It’s cooler live.

Nice job there Andy.
